The Lemming

Thought I'd follow the crowd and create one of these blog things. Hence the Lemmingness; which also happens to be involved in my most thought out story. Kind of; my take on my peers if you will. Inspired by Porcupine Tree's Fear of A Blank Planet. Be that as it may, it's not really what I'd pondered writing about.

As I see it; a blog is your(in this case my(thus personal)) take on life(therefore hopefully accessible/of interest to others).

Well, after some consideration (chutnering) I decided that the thing most often close to my heart is food. one thing I hate about this country(UK) is the fact that despite* our vast selection of restaurants, offering food from so many different cultures, our own cooking remains bland and unimaginitive. I stereotype and make no bones for doing so.

* - perhaps because of?

Of particular personal hatred are sauces. Perhaps I move in the wrong culinary circles but so many people seem to think tomato and basil is:
a) a nice sauce
b) good for every dish
it's not the most terrible sauce, but, please try something different once in a while! Time to get a herb rack and experiment. As far as I see, there are no right or wrong combinations, just differing tastes. I suppose the problem could well be the creation of a Comfort Zone: a number of recipes we can quickly follow with ease. Food which we enjoy. However, in getting stuck in such a culinary rutt it is easy to let so many great foods pass us by. Chuck out the recipe books, graffiti on the nearest fast food outlet and imagine. Anything, be creative, I mean I thought chilli chocolate would be pretty jank; now, I love it.

Challenging convention can produce something pretty exceptional. E.g. a couple of weeks ago myself and a couple of mates return from a drinking session with some very cheap pork chops. Apple sauce we thought. No apples. We did have plums which were swiftly chopped up, some port added a little honey, generous dash of cinnamon a couple of other tidbits and some ginger. The result was one of the bestest dinners I'd had in a while.

So, alcohol really does improve your cooking. Try something a little different (to you, even if it has been done before) it's well worth it.

After all eating pretty important, in a basic sense, make it memorable.

To sum up I know nothing about cooking, but, a fair bit about eating....

    Lemmings?

    The Lemming? I thought you were going to write about studying the Lemmings just before they leap into the water!
    Oh, I love the old English food - Suet puddings, Spotted Dick and Jam Roly Poly...mustn't forget the ploughmans lunch or the Friday nights Fish and Chips.
    Still I do agree it is nice to eat something completly different and tasty with the various herbs. Have you tried sweet chillie sauce over Philadelphia cream cheese? Makes a lovely dip for parties. Do you grow your own herbs?
    I'm afraid I'm one who loves to shove everything in a casserole dish and bung it in the oven! I've always hated cooking!
