Passive Voice...

Posted 23rd September 2009 at 11:47 PM by Gary Compton

I found this information (From a friend) quite useful in trying to eradicate the passsive voice from my story. Any of these words can lead to passive voice - allegedly.

eg Gary was felling a little depressed.

Be, Is, Am, Are, Has/had been, It/he/she/person, place or thing was, were. Check for clarity and strength: Could, should, would, might have, should have, around, about, sort of, kind of. Check for excessive wording, for some reason etc.

Look through your own words, you'll be surprised.

Yeah, I was surprised when someone at AW posted a link for something called "Keep It Active." "Would?" "Could?" "Started to?" "Began to?" Oh, man...

And recently I'd wondered about something Ctg and Peter had pointed to as slip into omnisicent. It began with "there were." I knew "there was/were" was one of the phrases to avoid, so I asked if this was one reason for it. My bad! The slip had to do with more than that. Now I know to avoid "there was/were" because it can lead to passive voice.

    Nice post, Gary!

Yes Michael, writing is an art and I dont think many of us are born with the skills.

You've got to graft your nuts off and learn. That's what I've done and am doing.

    eg:

Gary was felling a little depressed. TELLING!!!

His eyes filled up with a glaze of emotion and a tear ran down his face. 'Why is my life so bad?' SHOWING

    I think I'm right.
