I haven't been round much for 7 weeks as I was in a car accident. Me and my son were travelling to Bedlington near where I live, about 9.30AM and he was driving.
There was a brick in the road that we only saw at the last minute, we hit it and I think the tyre burst. The impact threw us across the oncoming traffic, thankfully there was none and into the trees.
Our guardian Angels were looking after us that day. He was totally unhurt thank God.
Unfortunately I took the brunt of it; I didn't have my belt on, so my right leg hit the dashboard, breaking my knee and my leg below the knee. As my 20 stone frame moved forward I must have stuck out my left arm to stop myself and I broke that as well.
My face hit the windscreen smashing my million pound smile. I now look like Albert Steptoe and I got a lot of glass in my scalp. The windscreen didn't break so I bounced back into my seat.
It was weird, I went to move my arm which lay across my chest; I could feel the bone moving but the arm stayed put. I knew it was busted. The police and ambulance arrived quickly and I was rushed to hospital where I eventually had two operations. I was in for a week and now been home for 6 weeks.
Cant do anything - just got crutches as they pinned the arm so it would heal quicker allowing me this luxury but its hard getting the confidence to use them.
I thought I'd take advantage and write but to be honest I couldn't be bothered so I watch day time TV instead. The highlight of my day is Dickensons Real Deal - I enter the competition in the hope I'll win an we'll at least have a nice Xmas. Being self-employed has its downside. YOU DONT GET PAID if your sick.
Anyway, I'm still here so its a blessing and today was the first day I got out the WIP

Did you damage many trees?
Slightly more seriously, that could have been. Slightly more serious, that is. I know being immobilised, sitting around twiddling your thumbs (assuming thumbs still twiddleable) is not over enjoyable, but it is at least temporary. Trying to break windscreens with your head can have effects much less so. I recommend avoiding it in the future.Posted 4th December 2011 at 03:45 PM by chrispenycate

I'm sorry to hear that, Gary. It's horrible. I know what it's like to be injured and to have to just be sat put. Not for seven weeks, but for seven days...
At least your son wasn't hurt, and that you weren't killed from it. I suspect if you had been going faster that would have been a real possibility. Good to see that you're able to come back.Posted 4th December 2011 at 05:23 PM by Karn Maeshalanadae

Well, as we hit the trees everything seemed to slow down. I could just hear the van cutting through the bushes and a couple of trees saying, 'Have you seen this idiot. He's a writer and his stories are a bit wooden - bit like him.'
Thanks Judge, had a good day today. Wrote a chapter of 900 words. Just debating whether to put it in critiques. Not sure I have the medication if I get slaughtered.Quote:
Yes cheers Karn. I'm trying to be positive. I miss walking the dogs on the beach which I did at least twice a day. Cant wait to get back there. Might do a Billy Connolly and get my kit of and run round a bit. It might kill a few of the blue rinse brigade who frequent the area with their Poodle's, so I better not!Quote:I'm sorry to hear that, Gary. It's horrible. Yes I have learned the lesson also. I didn't realise the passenger airbag didn't deploy if the seatbelt wasn't connected.Posted 4th December 2011 at 09:45 PM by Gary Compton

Jeez, I had noticed you had not been around, but never guessed it would have been something like this. As has been said it could have been so much worse, and I'm glad you are still around. When you are not I do miss your sense of humour and unique online presence!
It's enough to make me think, we very rarely wear seatbelts when we are out working (there is an exemption for the type of vehicle, but all the same it's made me think again.)
I hope it's not too long before you are back with us fully lighting things up with your wit and wisdom. PerpPosted 5th December 2011 at 07:20 AM by Perpetual Man

I'm glad to hear it wasn't worse, Gary, but sorry to hear it was as bad as it was.
Don't feel you have to explain if you decide to watch TV all day. Your body is putting most of its energy into healing. That 900 words is a real achievement (not that you'll get any points for that in the Critiques forum).Posted 6th December 2011 at 09:17 AM by Teresa Edgerton

Thank you so much Teresa, Crispy, Stormfeather, Ursa, Abernovo, Hex, PM, Alchemist, TE, Karn, Springs1971 for your support everybody. It just shows what a great bunch of people we have here.
Harebrain, I cant believe you ever wanted me to belt up especially that nothing but poetry leaves my lips or pen. Maybe we should get a Hanibal mask made to keep me in check!!Posted 6th December 2011 at 10:12 AM by Gary Compton

Uncle Compton, haven't you heard, the woods are always plotting against the unaware humans. Someone could call it as a conspiracy or even a secret alliance that they've made with the parking lot light poles. And when you last expect, they are going to be on your way.
But I hope that you're not going to murder them even though you make most amazing pieces with wood. They are first most your friends, and keep ultimately food on your table.
So, if you have nothing else to do and the words aren't coming out, I would suggest you to watch through the old doctor who's, or even pulling out that VRC from the storage and go through some of your tapes.
Any ways, I pray you speedy recovery, and I promise to not murder you even if you put up your piece for us to see. And praise the Lord that you're still in the books of living.Posted 8th December 2011 at 05:03 PM by ctg

I'm quite new to this forum and did not know that you have been away for a long time and because of what. Sorry to hear what had happened to you and your son, but I once face death in a similar way of car accident. You inspired me writing about it. I never did, just pushed it mentally back into the past.
Hope that you are quite well again and everything's right.Posted 9th December 2011 at 10:01 PM by Forgotten Realms
