Ladies and gentlemen, the first review is in - and, let's face it, it could have been worse. Not one to brag about, more one to blog about. Two stars out of five....
On the plus side, he liked the writing. On the debit side, he thought there wasn't enough of it. Reasonable point, and one that perhaps I should make a bit clearer on the product pages - Empire Dance isn't intended to be a single "doorstopper" volume; the idea is to be a "saturday serial" kinda affair, with multiple threads and cliffhangers.
Something I guess I have to get used to, along with rejections and critiques, especially in these days of publishing immediacy. So, in a thoughtful mood right now....

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to make things clear enough on the product pages (or the book cover, whichever applies) so that some people don't get the wrong idea, because ... well, they don't actually read what it says there very carefully. Your product description does say 156 pages. Anyone who reads that and expects a long book is not paying attention.
He liked your writing and he wanted more of it. I wouldn't call that a bad review.Posted 5th January 2011 at 01:03 AM by Teresa Edgerton

I think you're doing yourself down -- and of course it shouldn't be stopping you. He likes your characterisation, descriptions and imagination. That is tremendous! He was let down only because it wasn't what he expected, ie a book with a "proper" ending.
I think the idea of a Saturday serial is a good one, particularly the cliffhanger endings -- but I think part of the attraction of that is surely that one doesn't have to wait too long for the next gripping instalment. As you get more written, so people can buy the next one immediately, this will be less of a problem. (I could suggest you up your work-rate -- think you could manage 50,000 words a month...?!)Posted 5th January 2011 at 10:19 PM by The Judge

50k a month?? eek!
no, i'm trying to write these as fast as possible, of course, but one a month would be NaNoWriMoAGoGo - I'd burn myself out! i'm aiming to get the first 3 out, along with the fact that there'll be a short delay before the next set (because you're right - people do need to know when the series will continue), and then polish off the first draft of Malessar's Curse.
(if hmv goes tits-up anytime soon, i might have more time on my hands than i would really like....)
but thank you for the mini-slap!Posted 5th January 2011 at 10:37 PM by chopper
