how high's the wordcount, mama?*

well, 83k and pushing upwards for Heir to the North. Lunchtime writing is really taking off now; on a good day I can lay down 700 words, and even a bad day (distractions - Sky Sports News, Ross's eternal blethering, people trying to read over my shoulder, and so on...) I can hit 300. When you read it back it doesn't seem like a lot, and over the course of a week it only averages out at 2k or so, but given that this is my primary writing time, that doesn't matter at the moment. the most important part is being able to tune out the distractions and get into The Voice.
Plotwise, HttN has bulged in the middle, with the Hellean section gaining new characters and motives that will require a rewrite of Chapter Two. This should be a good thing however, as it'll give me a plausible reason for having Cassia hang around at the Library. and at the moment the introduction of Arca into the mix hasn't felt too forced either.
I can't wait to move the story onward and introduce the next character (our first sighting of the "Big Bad", after a mere 90k!!) ....and, after that, the next city - Cassia will have to move on to Galliarca (read: Marrakesh) for the climactic duel....

Timescale at the moment? Hope to tie up the first draft by Christmas.

*Five feet high and rising, if John R Cash is to be believed.

What's your target wordcount, Chop? Is the climatic duel with the Big Bad, or with another antagonist?

i think if i come in under 140k i'll be a very happy lad, Cul. but having said that, the 84k does include a few scenes from nearer the end of the book, so who knows...?

the duel does involve Malessar himself, of course, but other antagonists are, naturally, available...

Well that does leave you with a good sixty thousand words to develop the bad guy, but are you a little concerned that he doesn't make an appearance until more than halfway through? No temptation to tack on a prologue (unsightly and unnecessary things that they are coughsarcasmcough) or drop in a chapter to introduce him a bit earlier?

Of course I may be misinterpreting, and he's already been discussed, just never sighted...

well, he's instrumental in the prologue (already written and in fact somewhere in critiques...) and Baum spends the first half of the book telling Cassia what an evil sonnuvagun Malessar is, so the second half is all about slowly dispelling that impression....
