After mucho heavy editing, I now have The Quintessence Machine down to... drumroll... 280K words.
Yay.
Now, I know that this is considered waaaaayyyy too long for a first novel (having abandoned Though The Brightest Fell for the time being) but I remain hopeful. I've had several agents bite, but I'm still waiting for replies from those with the full manuscript. For the record, I am completely happy to see this beauty broken into 2 or 3 parts if that's what it'll take to get published; each part of the book works well alone anyway, but the story itself is pretty monstrously huge, so needs a lot of room for the telling.
I've also broken ground on not one but two new works; one is a "short" SF novel (I guess 100K range) called Sinterglass Road, the other a somewhat longer fantasy called Bastion. I'm at about 10K words on both right now, and I'm pretty happy with them.
Those of you who saw my comments re: MeadowHawk Press, I am relieved to see it's back online again... Who knows? If Sinterglass comes along as quickly as I expect it will, maybe it'll be able to be submitted by next year!
Back to the grindstone, by which I mean writing unti my eyes cross. Happens a lot. Trust me.

Yeah, it's long :-D Problem is it's a complex story; honestly, I tried to cut it down as much as I could, but it takes in philosophy, mathematics, ciphers, history, religion and a bunch of other stuff, as well as inventing a working alternative physics. (Wow, that sounds so bleeding pretentious when I put it like that!)
I know what you mean about other projects... I've got these two on the boil, another three or four put to one side and a few other ideas bubbling away, too...
Good luck with yours, sir, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart :-)
