| Alphabetical SFF I propose to make an alphabetical SFF gaming thread. At each letter we're posting what it reminds us about SFF: a book/movie/comics title, an author, a concept, whatever else going through your mind linked with SFF. And when the letter seems to dry up, we're passing to the next one... until Z of course. I searched and didn't find anything like that on the Chronicles, so I said myself this could be interresting. Thus, A like... Asimov, Isaac because he's one of the first authors I read Antimatter a true scifi concept even if it's no more science-fiction nowadays Alien quadrilogy one of the best series that hit theaters Ayerdhal a french author I like Arthur C. Clarke for 2001 |

Stephen Baxter is a trained engineer with degrees from Cambridge (mathematics) and Southampton Universities (doctorate in aeroengineering research). Baxter is the winner of the British Science Fiction Award and the Locus Award, as well as being a nominee for an Arthur C. Clarke Award, most recently for Manifold: Time. His novel Voyage won the Sidewise Award for Best Alternate History Novel of the Year; he also won the John W. Campbell Award and the Philip K. Dick Award for his novel The Time Ships. He is currently working on his next novel, a collaboration with Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Mr. Baxter lives in Prestwood, England. There. He writes Hard science fiction (some very hard) and stories about mammoths. Is better with physics than biology, in my opinion. Ther, isn't that more than you wanted to know? B would seem to be a good initial for writing Sci-Fi. A selection of my favorites: Killer Bees- Gregory Benford, Greg Bear, David Brin (the uplift guy) Various old B’s – J G Ballard, Alfred Bester, James Blish, Ray Bradbury, John Brunner, Algis Budrys, Octavia Butler Younger B - Lois McMaster Bujold Backdating a couple of A's- Brian W. Aldiss (who can sneak past as a "B" if he wants) and Piers Anthony. Or am I supposed to be adding cosmological phenomina (Big Bang) Sci- fi inventions (Buzzard ram jet) and book titles (beyond the blue event horizon) to round out the letter (I'm sorry, the rules are not very clear to me, and your example isn't over helpful either) ![]()

| Re: Alphabetical SFF Black Holes - A real science concept, but with such sci-fi potential! Baryonic Matter - Makes up only about 5% of the Universe. The rest is dark. Beryl - Beryllium Aluminum Silicate. The gemstone. Comes is many sparkly colours, i.e. when it's green it's an emerald. You can't have magic swords without a gemstone in the hilt. Beryl Bainbridge - Nothing at all to do with sci-fi, but she is such an author that I was hoping to shoe-horn her in. Bursar, the - Pratchett's Wizard Bursar of the Unseen Univserity. Remember him? Mad as a badger. Takes dried frog pills which make him ...worse. and finally Binky - Death's horse. |

So, in the spirit of Bs Beeblebrox, Zaphod - I know that you all know that we all know that the man is one hell of a hoopy frood and knows damn well where his towel is. (I suppose I have to add a technical description for non-hitchhikephiles: Character in Douglas Adams' 'Hitchhikers Guide' series. Two heads. President of the Galaxy.)

| Re: Alphabetical SFF Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see…(Strawberry fields) Shamelessly goes directly to Go, collectin £200. How do we know when to change letters, anyway? A is evidently for Andromeda It is for Astounding and Amazing and their slightly less disreputable brother, Analog, who dug the foundations on which so much has been built Axe and armour, creative anachronisms, fantasy staples Anthologies which, while not unique to the genre, introduced so many of us to so many authors. Kingsley Amis who, with "New maps of hell", gave us a first indication of what was waiting for us. Robert & Lynn Asprin- take two asprin and call me tomarrow if it's no better . Add Poul Anderson, the Addams family and Roger McBride Allen, for no particular reason. And Neil Armstrong, for living science fiction in '69. Astronomy and asteroids, auguries and abaci, ants ( whose social system has beeb used as the basis for I don't know how many stories) and archangels, aircraft and atmosphere (both the Sci-fi stuff we breath, and the other generated in horror movies by horrible music), There's still scope for A ![]() |
