While I catch the modern connotation, frankly darn near anything can be twisted into that channel; I rather like Knockers -- remind me of several wonderful ghost stories from when I was a kid -- things heard but not seen; and authentic folklore to boot!

Konakijijii -- what a lovely word, and a beautifully mournful and sad concept. I don't recall running across the word before, so thank you for bring that one to my attention!

Mouse ... Knockers is wonderfully shivery; all those things that mysteriously go thump in the night and memories of being buried under a comforter and several pillows because of course if I could not see THEM, they could not see me.

Such elegant, sorrowful words Japanese and other Asian folklore have. Always felt sad for the animal spirits coming up against Taoist priests. At least in Indian myth there often are happy endings.

Nesa: have you ever read A. Merritt's "The Fox Woman"? I think you'd like it very much -- as well as his "Three Lines of Old French".... And, yes, they do. Such beautiful, mellifluous words that just flow off the tongue, and express so much...

Meowrr j.d. and just when I thought I'd caught up on you too. Shall go look for these two. I did love Neil Gaiman's Dreamhunters. That was a gentle, lyrical very Asian love story with hope at the end. And the artwork was wonderful. Very fluid and whimsical.

Well, on that you're definitely ahead of me. I've read far too little Gaiman; I'll have to look that one up. And these stories by Merritt may be on the 'net; if not, they can be found in The Fox Woman and Other Stories, which also includes "Through the Dragon Glass" and "People of the Pit", which may have influenced HPL's descriptions in some of his stories.

A typical Lamia is about 8 feet long and wieghing &00 pounds.

Lammasu,

This crautre has the golden brown body of a lion, the wings of a great eage and the face of a human.
Lammasus are noble creatures concerenee with the welfare and safety of all good beings.
These creautes dwell most often in old, abandoned temples and ruins located in remote areas, where they contemplate how best of eradicate evil in the world.
Adentiurers sometimes seek them out to benifit from thier wisdom and knowledge of aincent mysteries.
Lammasus often offer thier assitence if the adventurer is directly combatting evil.
The demeanor of a Lammasu is noble and stern, but these creatures can be quite compassionate.

Re: Alphabetical SFF

Lillend,

This creature looks like a female human or elf with the lower torso of a multicoloured serpent and huge , strikingly patterend wings like a birds.
Lillends are mystrious visitors from another plane.
Many are skilled in one or more forms of artistic expression.
Lillends are lovers of music and art. Gold and even food means little to them, whilst a song, story or peice of artwork can be value beyond measure for them.
The destruction of art or ill treatment of artists enrages them. They are infamous for holding grudges and are often encountered seeking violent retribution.
Lillends also have a great love of unspoild wilderness. The wilds remind them of the natural beauty of thier homeland. A Lillend is as protective of its chosen wilderness as it is of its art.

Lizardfolk,
This tall humanoid looks like a cross between a powerfully built human and a lizard. It is scaled, has clawed hands, a lizards face, long tail and toothy jaws.
Lizardfolk are primitive reptillian hunters that can be very dangerous if provoked.
Although they are ombivores Lizardfolk prefare meat, popular lore tells that Lizardfolk prefare human flesh but this charge is largely unfounded, although they will eat human flesh if other meat is scarce.
Some more advanced tribes build huts and use a variety of weapons and sheilds, these equipments are usually stolen from unwary travellers.

Locathah,

This humanoid is slender and a little shorter than a human. It has fine, yellow green scales and large fins on its arms and legs.
The nomadic Locathahs dwell in warm coastal waters, hunting fish and gathering crustations for food. Although humanoid in shape they are clearly more fish than human.
Locathahs are not particually aggressive but do not trust land dwellers, far to many of thier kind have been ensnared in nets and killed for food.

Lycanthrope,

Lycanthropes are humanoids, or giants, who have the natural power to transform themselves into animals. In its natural form a Lycanthrope looks like any other member of its kind, though natural Lycanthropes and those who have been afflicted for a long time tend to have, or aqquire features reminiscent of thier animal forms such as thick, shaggy hair, pointed teeth, or long, strong fingers.
In animal form a Lycanthrope resembles a larger, more powerful version of the animal it is impersonating, although in closer inspection its eyes (that often glow red in the dark) have a spark of unnatural intelligence.

Re: Alphabetical SFF

There are too many authors whose last name begins with M. I'm just going to list three that other people might not mention:

C.E. Murphy
Pat Murphy
R.A. MacAvoy

For a movie: Matrix
For a celestial body: Mars
For a title: The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
For a fictional place: Mordor
