Re: Alphabetical SFF

Actually unless it's been posted already I can't quite believe that the great Patricia McKillip hasn't been suggested. Her Riddlemasters Of Hed trilogy and Forgotten Beasts Of Eld are classics of the Fantasy genre.

China Mieville - King of New Weird fiction with some evocative prose and a prodigious imagination.

John Myer Myers - Best know for his fantasy novel Silverlock.

Mustav Meyrink - Buddhist, banker, translator esp. german copies of many of Dicken's books and author of the classic "Golem" and the popular "The Green Face".

Re: Alphabetical SFF

Kyes Fantastical Creatures N,

Naga,

All Nagas have long, snakelike lower bodies covered in glistening scales.
They are human from the waist up and attrarctive.
However if they are travelling in crowded towns and citys they magically transform into a human guise.
Naga's are highly intelligent creatures with a variety of magicall powers.
They are natural masters of those around them, using subtle wards and cleaver traps to keep intruders from disturbing thier peace.
Nagas have been around since the beggining of time, they are one of the oldest races and have a inbred malevolance for any other race.

Night Hag,

This being looks like a hidiously ugly human woman.
Its flesh is the blue-violet of a deep bruise and covered with warts, blisters and open sores.
It has stranegly jet black hair and jagged yellow teeth, the eyes burn like hot coals, throwing out a thick, red radience.
Merciless and utterly evil, night hags are human females who have willingly given thier souls to have unnatural control of dark powers, been transformed by dark powers into this being of evil upon death.
They constantly hunger for flesh and souls of innocent men and women.

Nightmare,

At first glance this creature looks like a large powerfull horse with a jet black coat.
A closer look, however, reveals its true nature.
Flames wreathe its steely hooves, its steely hooves, trail from its flared nostrils and smolder in the depths of its dark eyes.
Nightmares are proud equine creatures with hearts as black and evil as the dark abyss in which they come from.
A nightmare is a wild and restless creature.
It roams the world doing evil and haunting the dreams of those who cross it.
Although they have no wings the creature can fly with great speed, it seldom allows anyone to ride it, but particular powerfull and evil creatures have been known to make mounts of Nightmares.

Re: Alphabetical SFF

Nymph,

This beings beauty exceeds mere words; she is captivating and dangerous because of the emotions she inspires.
They generally have long copper coloured hair, thier skin is always perfect and flawless thier eys are large and ears are long, pointed and backswept, her body is perfection incarnete and voice musical and captivating.
Nymphs are natures embodiment of physical beauty, and gaurdians of sacred places of the wild.
They are so unbearibly lovely that a mere glance can blind an onlooker.
Nymphs hate evil and any who would despoil the wilds for any reason.
A nymphs demeanor is wild and mercurial, like nature itself. She embodies both great beauty and fearsome danger.
She is kind and graceful to mortols who revere the wild places of the world, but is quick to strike against those who take more than they need or who treat nature thoughtlessly.
Animals of all kind flock to Nymphs, ignoring the presence of natural enimies, they will not be harmed by preditors in the presence of a nymph, injured beasts know that the nymph will tend thier wounds.

Re: Alphabetical SFF

From the world of HP Lovecraft:

Nahab. The secret name of Keziah Mason. (The Dreams In The Witch-House)

Nameless City. City populated by a reptilian race somewhere in the Arabian desert prior to the coming of man to the area. Once mankind appeared, the city was abandoned by the race who sought refuge in subterranean caverns. Abdul Alhazred spent time in the area prior to penning the Necronomicon.

Nathaniel Derby Pickman Foundation. Foundation in Arkham, Massachusetts which funded, along with the aid of other, unnamed sources, the ill-fated Miskatonic University Expedition to the Antarctic in 1930-31. (At the Mountains of Madness)

Necronomicon, The. Book of black arts by the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred. Recently put into print for the general public, much to the objections of those who know its true purpose and power. Some material was intentionally left out, though it is general belief that enough of the manual remains in the published book to open gates best left locked for all eternity. One of the known copies existed for 91 years in an arcane library in the Free-Will Church o f Providence, Rhode Island. After Robert Blake’s death in 1935, a Doctor Dexter removed this and other tomes and added it to his library.

Nephren-Ka. Also known as the Black Pharaoh, the last Egyptian pharaoh of the Third Dynasty. Nephren-Ka began a worship of Nyarlathotep and birthed the ideas that later gave way to the Starry Wisdom that swept through Egypt and the world. In the course of this worship, he acquired the Shining Trapezohedron from merchants of Khem. Once in his possession, he built a dark temple around it, committing sacrifices to the Haunter of the Dark in exchange for the creature’s limitless knowledge. It was this exchange that ultimately brought Nephren-Ka’s reign to an end. Such were his deeds that his name was struck from the monuments and other records. (The Haunter of the Dark)

Nith. A former notary of the city of Ulthar. He held office during the enactment of the law prohibiting the killing of cats in the city. (The Cats of Ulthar)

N'kai. Black, lightless city hidden beneath the crust of the earth. It is from N'kai that the frightful Tsathoggua— the amorphous, toad-like god creature—came. (The Whisperer In Darkness)

Edward Norrys. Captain of the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Norrys was a friend of Alfred Delapores and related the superstitions which abound of Exham Priory to him. Norrys hailed from Anchester, England. After showing Exham Priory to Delapores, Norrys convinced his uncle to sell the place back to the Delapores at a very reasonable price. Norrys assisted Alfred’s father in investigating the strange occurrences at the Priory and was present when the catacombs beneath the place were unearthed. Alfred Delapores’ father killed Norrys and devoured him. (The Rats In The Walls)

Mr Noyes. Human ally of the Mi-Go occupying an outpost in Round Hill, Vermont. Mr Noyes' origin is never discussed, though it is stated he spoke with a cultured voice and had a Bostonian accent. Mr Noyes was first recorded on May 1, 1915 while conducting religious ceremonies with the Mi-Go at the edge of Lee's Swamp near Dark Mountain. (The Whisperer In Darkness)

Nug-Soth. A magician of the dark conquerors of 16,000 A.D., Nug-Soth was a victim of a mind transfer with a member of the Great Race of Yith. This transfer took him back to almost 150,000,000 B.C., where he met Professor Peaslee. (The Shadow Out Of Time)

Nyarlathotep. The messenger of the Great Old Ones, also named, among other things, the Black Man. Nyarlathotep is considered an Outer God. The Haunter of the Dark is an avatar of Nyarlathotep. Nyarlathotep is the messenger of Azathoth and the one member of the Mythos who deals on a personal level with human beings in general. He is described, in his human form at least, as being of the old native blood of Egypt and looking like a Pharaoh. Wherever he visits, rest vanishes and the wails of nightmares untold echoes through the streets. Nyarlathotep is especially fond of technology and psychology.
Nyarlathotep appears in many disguises, but as stated earlier, the one constant is his bond with Azathoth, the Idiot God. He is described as the very soul of "gigantic, tenebrous, ultimate gods – the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles" which make up the Mythos. As such, his evil is absolute, for he is not only the servant of these creatures, but their very consciousness. Nyarlathotep has appeared through the range of time, from ancient Egypt where he instructed Nephren-Ka in the arts of the darkest magic, up until modern day, where one might find him traveling and spreading his terror where any will listen.
One of his most notable sightings occurs in Arkham, Massachusetts in 1928 along with the spirit of Keziah Mason. The two creatures, along with Keziah's familiar, Brown Jenkins, went to work to bring Walter Gilman into their fold by making him sign the Black Book in the presence of Azathoth. It was by pure will that Gilman was able to resist.
Walter Gilman describes him as "a tall, lean man of dead black coloration without the slightest sign of Negroid features, wholly devoid of either hair or beard, and wearing as his only garment a shapeless robe of some heavy black fabric. His feet were indistinguishable because of table and bench, but he must have been shod, since there was a clicking whenever he changed positions. The man did not speak, an bore no trace of expression on his small, regular features."

The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym, by Edgar Allan Poe -- stowaways, pirates, cannibalism, and a trip to a series of mysterious realms in the South Seas near the Antarctic, inspiration for some aspects of Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness

Negotium Perambulans, by E. F. Benson -- story of a mysterious presence that avenges damage done to an ancient church

"The Nemesis of Fire", by Algernon Blackwood, about the invoking of a fire elemental and the mysteries of unfathomed nature

Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen -- the famous send-up of the original Gothic

"Novel of the Black Seal" and "Novel of the White Powder", by Arthur Machen -- two tales included in his episodic novel, The Three Impostors, both very powerful evocations of the mysteries of existence when the veil is torn

Hume Nisbet -- largely forgotten Victorian writer who wrote many tales bordering on or using supernatural themes, including Ashes (1890), The Jolly Roger (1891), and the collections The Haunted Station (1894) and Stories Weird and Wonderful (1900)
