More powerful in the sense that there's more they can do to an individual's mind, but I think less powerful in the sense of how many people they can affect and at what distance. The illusions appear to involve controlling actual light and sound, not people's minds, because Sylar was seen last season (in the future) making the entire world think he was Nathan Petrelli, including over TV and radio and in still photographs in newspapers and magazines. And if used right, control over light and sound has the potential to not only trick people but also be used as a weapon or mess with some kinds of technology.
