As far as I can tell, it rules out supersymmetry, but that's all. The string theorists use the E8 root system to describe their Calabi-Yau manifolds. And the string theorists have long considered the 'E8 x E8 Heterotic' system to be their most promising one for getting beyond the Standard Model. Although from what I can gather (the maths is beyond me), this model predicts supersymmetry.
In general, though, the two approaches (this and string theory) are not diametrically opposite.
But it's fascinating......I can't wait for the LHC to go online.......finally........... |
