Reading Disasters

I was mentioning how I have a hobby of reading whilst im cooking on another thread and thought I would share with you what I did the other day.

I was cooking a nice meal, my partner had several members of his family over for tea and, of course, I had to impress them by getting the best quality ingredients.
Which lead to alot of messing about prepairing them but hey, I could handle that...
The only problem I had was I was in the middle of the most exciting chapter of my book, I couldnt put in down!
I had sirloin steak under the grill at this time, I had forgotten all about it...
Next thing I knew there were pretty orange and red flames coming from the cooker, I dont know how long they had been there I was so engrossed in reading my novel..
How embarressing, my boyfriend, flagged by his family I was so desprate to impress, ran into the kitchen, then the fire alarm went off...
Six people in a tiny kitchen trying to put out the flames.
I was so ashamed having to explain I was reading a book and not paying the food any attention, needless to say we ordered out for some food...

Have anyone else done something so dumb whilst being enthralled in a book?

Re: Reading Disasters

I was going to post something about cooking and reading being kind of a scary combination in reply to your other post but I talked myself out of it.

I missed my train stop once. That was kind of upsetting, but I think you still win.

Re: Reading Disasters

No sorry Kye, never had that happen before although may have missed the odd train stop.

I hope this little event didn't damage things too much?

I forgot to get off the train once - ended up four stops away from home. I have missed the bus a few times, and yes like you Kye, I once set fire to a pizza because I was so engrossed in my book, black smoke everywhere, bits of tomato all over the cooker and other assorted food pieces - it wasn't pretty.

Re: Reading Disasters

Both my brother and I were not allowed to go outside with a book or a comic as we were oblivious to anything else well reading including traffic.
