Re: Just finished GOTM

What??? You haven't read GRRM??? If you promise to pick up A Game of Thrones I promise to continue on in the Erikson series. (you really should check him out though)

No, I don't really want massive info dumps. I like some things to be revealed as you go along, and even if there are some things I have to figure out for myself that is alright too. It's no fun being spoon fed everything.

GRRM is not without his lack of explanations either, they are just different. Many people put these two authors in the same conversation, but after reading Erikson now, I really don't think they are that similar. There is loads of magic in Erikson's world, not so much in Martins for example. They both change POV's, but at a different rate, Erikson within chapters, while Martin has a different character each chapter, with each character having numerous chapters per book. I would say they both also deal with political intrigue.

They are both great authors in their own right though.

Re: Just finished GOTM

If you can apply politics to a whole pantheon then yes, without giving anything away, you could say that Eriskon deals with political intrigue.

I think I'll find me some Martin after my Modesitt Marathon (I need an "M" author/series, you see. Just finished my Malazan Marathon, now I'm on to my [L. E.] Modesitt [Jr.] Marathon... I need an "M" after them!).

Re: Just finished GOTM

Well Martin fits right in then. Pick up A Game of Thrones by GRR Martin, and you'll be good to go.

Although I believe you have quite a few books ahead of you in the Modesitt Marathon. So I won't expect you to tell me what you thought of GRRM for awhile.

Re: Just finished GOTM

I will admit that he does take his time between books. But to me it's not a big deal, since they are such good books. I don't mind waiting that long, as long as its worth it.

Yeah, the "worth it" is where aFfC fell down, unfortunately.

Re: Just finished GOTM

I liked AFFC, but thought it was definately the weakest of the series so far (imo). Hopefully ADWD will be up to par.

Re: Just finished GOTM

I think people only perceived its weakness as it missed out a lot of fave characters and only filled us in on the Southern part of the story

It will be interesting to see if opinions change after ADWD as the two are linked

Seem to be in a reading slump since the bf bought a ps3 lol need to get back into reading

Yes, gaming consoles will do that from time to time.

Re: Just finished GOTM

lol

I loveed GoTM but can't seem to force myself to get past the first couple of chapters of Deadhouse gates

I know I'm gonna love it but seem to be in a reading slump.. mind you work is really busy and stressful atm and I can't handle Erikson while stressed - he takes up way too much attention lol

I'm even strtuggling with Abercrombie.. I might take a break from Fantasy and read the trainspotting sequel.. gotta make me feel good about my life .. right?

Re: Just finished GOTM

LOL. Yes I know what you mean. That is why I'm not continuing with Erikson at the moment. I have some other stuff going on in my life, and need to read a book that isn't quite so involved.

Re: Just finished GOTM

He is more of an indulgent I have time to myself entertain and involve me kind of writer

Took me a while to get through GoTM as I was stressed at work and found Brooks an easier but less involving read

Re: Just finished GOTM

For sure. I can usually read books while watching TV and other distractions, but I found with Erikson I had to have almost complete quiet, otherwise I had to reread sections. (which I had to do anyway)
