Two of the greats IMO.

Bob Shaw is the writer I'd most like to emulate - lots of novels, just about all of them stand-alone and covering a wide range of SF themes, all well-written and exciting, and short enough to polish off quickly. Brilliant!

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times at conventions, he was a friendly guy and very amusing only too happy to sign your books for you. And James White was another one.

Re: Show us you fantasy/ficiton-bookcollection!

I got rid of most of my book collection years ago because it was taking up too much room, having two kids made space more valuable, and the vast majority of the paperbacks I would never read again, they just sit there gathering dust.
So, I now only keep hardbacks of favourite authors or favourite books which I know I'll re-read (or plan to). Or, nice sets (such as the pratchett unseen library editions). Paperbacks are read and passed on, or stored in boxes.

I now find myself in a situation where I have a spare upstairs room, which I'm currently converting into a study/library, for my hardbacks, artbooks and dvds.

Re: Show us you fantasy/ficiton-bookcollection!

I like showing off my bookshelves, it seems. Here is my bookshelf at my Exeter house (much smaller than my Home shelves, but my collection has grown substantially while I've been here). And yes, it's next to a sink.

The first shelf is all my course books (mostly). That's my potted plant on top, which I'm trying to coax into growing around the shelves. It's happening...slowly. Anyway, so course books. I have a lot of Shakespeare. The Winter's Tale, Othello and Hamlet all in separate books. Shakespearean comedies in another large volume. And finally the complete works of Shakespeare (the big, fat, maroon book) which I bought by accident and decided to keep. I also have a Renaissance Drama anthology, a Literary Theory anthology, poetry from the Renaissance...The books on the left and across to the two small green books are my Shock of the New books -- Mrs Dalloway, Ulysses, The Secret Agent, Yates, Auden etc etc. Then a few of my 'own' books, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Evelyn Waugh collection on the left, Dracula, The Illiad, Frankenstein. And the books on the right are for Creative Writing: In a Free State, Martin Amis' Experience to name a couple.

The second shelf contains, as can be seen, a handful of my King books, some other horror books, some of my science fiction books (Bradbury, Heinlein etc) and a few Pratchetts.

The third shelf has the rest of my books here at Exeter -- some Masterworks hiding at the back (Moorcock, Kipling, Bradbury) a few more horrors, and of course, Hobb and Erikson.

Nice collection HooyFrood . I've been meaning to put up pics of my bookshelves since this thread started but kept running into obstacles...Hopefully I'll get it done soon.

Cheers, DeepThought

Oooh! Is that Lord Valentine's Castle I spy? Have you read the other two books dealing with Valentine?

And is it just me, or is that bookcase in the bathroom?

Re: Show us you fantasy/ficiton-bookcollection!

Thanks, DeepThought. That's about a third of my overall collection, with the majority of my books being left on the shelves at Midlands Home (see back a few pages to see those).

And yes, it is Lenny. And no, I haven't. Pyan told me to buy that one when we were at FantasyCon and spotted it on a stall. Still haven't read it, though.

It's not the bathroom, it's the corner of my room. We all have sinks in our rooms. Which makes life easier in the mornings when you have seven people who would be otherwise filling the bathrooms for washing and etc.

Re: Show us you fantasy/ficiton-bookcollection!

Give me chance, of all the books on those shelves, over half still need to be read. It's hard to find time for recreational reading when you have course books to read every week.

And I expect it to be good, otherwise Pyan wouldn't have suggested it (unless he was feeling particularly malevolent).

Re: Show us you fantasy/ficiton-bookcollection!

GAH How did I miss this thread -- ahh its a sticky --stickies always get missed
Nice collections Hoopy and Wy - Hoopy you keep your books next to a sink!!!
in a student house!! - very very very risky that!
well I am more pushed for space that others - so I not only have shelves of books, but piles and mini mountains as well!
.

ps - that bottom shelf - there are books stacked behind those in front!!
OR needs a bigger room!
one problem is the slanting roof I have over my head - result of being in the attic - which means less space for towering shelves!
