Film Scores

I'm going through a huge film score phase at the moment! Been listening to the gladiator, schindlers list, the piano, narnia, man on fire, amelie, ghost in the shell, final fantast advent children - and a few others quite a lot recently!

Are you lot into film scores? If so which ones do you love (as i feel the need to buy more when i get paid )

Re: Film Scores

I was never really one for film scores (soundtracks, now that's another matter!), but I was so impressed by Howard Shore's job on the LotR trilogy that I bought the 3 CD set of the whole lot. It's nice music to have on in the background.

Re: Film Scores

The score from the first Harry Potter film (only the first). Nicely faery-like and portentious. With incense and tea it is second only to 'medieval chant'.

As a guy who's been into film scores passionately for the past 35 years and owns a collection of approximately 500 soundtrack CDs, I think I can set you on your way!

Where to begin? In the last 80 years the artform has given us so many great scores to choose from. I'll try to give you a short, representative list of the creme de la creme and only items presently available on CD:

Jerry Goldsmith - 100 Rifles, The Blue Max, Total Recall, Extreme Prejudice, Take a Hard Ride, Star Trek: The Motionless Picture, Basic Instinct, The Final Conflict, Legend, Chinatown, Poltergeist, Masada and The 13th Warrior.

Bernard Herrmann - The 7th Voyage of Sindbad, Jason and the Argonauts, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (film, not TV!), The Egyptian and On Dangerous Ground.

John Williams - Dracula, The Fury, The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Alex North - The Agony and the Ecstasy, 2001: A Space Odyssey (original, unused score) and Dragonslayer.

Miklos Rozsa - El Cid, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis and Ivanhoe.

Basil Poledouris - Flesh and Blood, Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers and RoboCop.

I hope this helps you out. Some of these CDs have cues you can sample free online at the websites for Varese Sarabande and Film Score Monthly. Feel free to write me anytime. Take care.

Re: Film Scores

I've collected film scores in the past, and of all of them, the one that stands out most is Conan the Barbarian. Simply great.

Conan the Barbarian
is one of the most brilliant scores of the 1980's. Have you heard Poledouris' score to director Paul Verhoeven's Flesh and Blood? If you liked Conan, I think you'll love this one.

Re: Film Scores

Always quite liked Ennio Morricone myself - I thought the OST for "The Thing" was superb - captured the feel of the setting perfectly, even just in the opening credits. Superb! His soundtrack for "The Mission" is another favorite, and of course he did "A Fistfull of Dollars" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Hmm - then there's Philip Glass - Kundun was quite good, but Koyaanisqatsi was a masterpiece of music, and is the first thing I put on the stereo when I need to relax.

Also, everyone must have an album by The Black Mages to hear more FF themes brought to life. ^.^

I really like it. the version's of j-e-no-v-a and one winged angel are both quite both immense! I'm on a hunt to find the sheet music for signs (the music that plays when kadaj is talking to the wheelchair man)
