The aspect of the Pern books I enjoyed the most was the sort of "science-fantasy" crossover -- specifically, the rediscovery of lost technology by a pseudo-medieval culture.
So I think All the Weyrs of Pern would be my favorite, because that's the book that focuses most on the re-learning of technology. Also, AIVAS is just a great, great character. The fact that it's got a sort of dry sense of humor is just priceless.
Having said all that, I also really like some of the earlier books, where the lost history is sort of hinted at, and the truth about the southern continent is gradually revealed.
And to further muddle things, there's something really appealing about Dragonflight, simply because it's the first Pern novel McCaffrey wrote, and everything's a little less developed; a little more.... raw, maybe? |
