| Re: first book I came to this part of the forum to see if others were finding the same things as I am. Apparently some are. My sister's boyfriend gave me Deadhouse Gates to read when I visited once as I hadn't brought a book to read. He hadn't finished it because he found it confusing. So I read it, and loved it, and then spent months trying to find book one in the series. Seemed all the book stores had the rest of them but not the first, and I kept forgetting to look it up online.
I honestly thought that the first book would explain all the things that I found confusing, having started with the second book.. and I was wrong. He jumps right into talking about backstory like I should know it, warrens are popping up all over and characters are bringing up specific warrens like I should know what they are and how they work. Hardly any of the characters from book two are even mentioned in book one!??!
But I guess that is his style. I was pretty impressed when a lot of the backstory was explained by Mammot to Crokus, and I felt like I was a pupil right along with him.. going oooooooooooh, that's how it went.
I did find in book one that the relationships between certain men and women were stilted and didn't make a lot of sense. I think he has really grown in style since then.
I'm now starting Memories of Ice and am thrilled to see 'my' characters again, and not even much time has passed. |
