Re: Brienna's "Last" word The word was "Jaime" - she had a choice between death or killing Jaime. In her last desperate breath she screamed his name, but the men present would interpret that as her choosing to kill the Kingslayer.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word Sorry, I didn't realize it was covered already. I didn't want to read nine pages of a thread that discussed something that seemed so obvious to me. I really don't think the mystery of her "last" utterance is going to hang on Martin's use of terms between "word" and "name". It wouldn't be that great of a story if every word he used was taken in the most literal sense. "Jaime" fits perfectly here, and if that's not it then there's probably no realistic way to figure out what it is until we read the next book. It seems like everybody is just guessing as much as they can, like it's a lottery and the one who guesses right gets half a million I-told-you-so's.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word Or "Ice" since Stoneheart had the sword in her hands when Brienne was dangling from the tree. And, PK, like the lottery, while the odds may be long, you will never win without playing. Go back and skim through the pages and see the suggestions. Some good ones there.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word My early notion was "Arya," but now you can count me in the "Stannis" camp. I've read Clash of Kings several times already, but during this latest re-read that passage seems to me more significant than I first thought. Catelyn, Queen of the Zombies, does take oaths seriously, or else she wouldn't be so angry about Brienne's supposed oathbreaking. By saying "Stannis," Brienne would remind Cat of her own solemn oath. Besides, I don't think at this point that Cat is persuadable that Brienne is going to rescue her daughters.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word I also have thought the same, Cape. Though I believe she will mention how Catelyn promised to never hold her back from Stannis, it is highly probable she might mention Arya being seen with the Hound near Saltpans.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word She promised or swore that she would not stand in Briennes' way or stop her when it came time to go after Stannis. Yeah, was when they got near Riverrun after Renlys' murder.

Re: Brienna's "Last" word I'm going for "thappireth". Even outlaws on the run from a king that wasn't a king when they were in the employ of a king whose son was king but then died now his other son is king but it isn't really his son since it's his brother in law's child with his wife making it an incestuous ....well, you get my point. Even they need to eat. Why would she call out Stannis? She has no connection to him.
