Why can't people (producers, fans etc) be more patient these days when it comes to a new series? Enterprise did exactly what TNG and DS9 had done in as much as when season three started, the show really took off. The producers realised that they were on to a winner with the new season arc format but it still needed refining. So they create season four with several three-part episodes which, in my opinion, worked fantastically. Plans for season five were going to build upon this and also introduce Shran as a regular cast member instead of guest star. The last two-parter which featured Trip and T'Pol's baby was meant to be the final episode of season 4 and season 5 would have seen the formation of the Federation. Cancelling Enterprise was a massive missed opportunity. I understand the reasons why it wasn't liked by many people, but it was cancelled because these people were impatient. With shows like Lost, 24 and Heroes which have hit the ground running in season 1, programme makers are pressured into getting it right from the word go which is incredibly difficult. This is what worries me about the future of star trek. If a new series (whenever such a thing materialises) fails to impress from episode 1, will star trek be cancelled forever??? |
