Tolkien and Lewis

does anybody else think this was the best author to author friendship ever? if so, why? PS why is there no thread for C.S.Lewis?

Re: Tolkien and Lewis

There are various threads involving Lewis and/or Narnia here and there about the forums. Just never quite enough interest to inspire the creation of a Lewis sub-forum. (Maybe one of these days one of these threads will tip the balance.)

But to answer your question, I would agree that it was one of the best author to author friendships ever, and possibly the greatest in fantasy. I can't say how much influence Tolkien had on Lewis (beyond converting him back to Christianity, which certainly had it's impact!). I have read Lewis's statement to the effect that nobody ever did or could influence a word that Tolkien wrote, but I think there is evidence that Lewis's encouragement was very important during the long process of writing LOTR, and it's very likely that it kept his friend going at times when the sheer magnitude of the task and the unlikelihood (as it appeared at one point) of ever getting it published would have otherwise overwhelmed him.

At the same time, I know a lot of writers who owe a great deal to their friendships with other writers.

Re: Tolkien and Lewis

=) It was a great frindship ^^ ... the best? I don´t know ^^ I also say one of the best .
^^ I´ve read the first Narnia book and all the books from Tolkien. There are some similarities. For example, the two worlds (Narnia and middle earth) arise with music ^^ in the Silmarillion the Ainur sangs, in Narnia Aslan the Lion. ^^
One of them (Tolkien and Lewis) had influence on the other =)
*suspire* I like this friendship xD

Re: Tolkien and Lewis

I started reading this and got confused - I was under the impression that Tolkien and Lewis were, at the end, closer to bitter rivels as one thought the other was stealing thier ideas.
