The skill of the actor, dahling, with the encouragement of a quality director.

The last season has had some terrific writing and goes some way towards offering hope for the future of the series - rumours aside of RTD's deathwish for the franchise after he's done with it (I don't think I started the rumour with the last sentence, I'm sure I heard someone else saying it before).

Doctor Who is still an excellent format and a fascinating premise. With good writing, stories like Blink and the one where the Doctor hid in his watch (the title will come to me, but you know the one I mean), it can challenge anything currently on the telly and win. With bad handling - anything by RTD - it can be risible.
