Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

Oddly enough, I actually kinda.... liked Robert.

I know I'll get yelled at for it. Lord knows the man wasn't a good king, husband, or father. He was a boorish imbecile. But he did have a certain joie de vivre that I found appealing. I guess I just like characters who seem like they would be good drinking buddies.

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

I stand corrected AryaU.F. Without a doubt Robert would be a blast to go clubbing with; he's rich, big as a damn polar bear, great sense of humor, might help ya get hooked up with a cute lady, and he could drink everyone else under the table and still be the designated driver!!

So you cause me to turn the sails a little bit. I do like Robert and his personality. In fact at times I feel sorry for him. He is a man of huge apetites and fun times. All he wanted was one woman and the chance to fight his battles face to face and fist to fist. Yet all of these things were taken from him.

But for the same reason I despise Cat I have to feel the same for Robert. If he doesn't screw the pooch the history of the seven kingdoms is completely different.

But as our good friend Adasunshine reminds me, without them the the story does not exist.

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

AryaU: the problem is, by the time AGOT starts, that joie de vivre has soured into self-indulgence and bullying.

I've said before that Robert is one of the most tragic characters in the series, in the dramatic sense of the term: his fatal flaws are evident even in retrospect, and lead inevitably to his downfall. His passions defeat him. At the start of AGOT, to borrow my own description of him , he's the wreckage of a man who could have been great: and he did it all to himself.

Ned's description of Robert at the time of his wedding to Cersei is especially poignant, because it's true. But I don't believe anyone, even Lyanna, could have stopped him throwing it all away for another drink, another roast chicken, another pretty face. And Lyanna, I think, realised that. Robert was too weak to stay faithful, too weak to regulate his drinking and eating and too weak to rule.

And John, Robert may wanted one woman's love, but he wanted more than one woman. He wanted as many as he could get and he would not have changed that.

I actually agree with you that I feel sorry for Robert: pity is what I feel about him most of the time in AGOT. He's a pretty pitiable guy when we meet him. There are times when I feel angry towards him too, and times when I feel disgusted by him: the times when I could feel respect or liking for him are too closely followed by him throwing away his chances to redeem himself, though, so they get soured.

I wouldn't go clubbing with AGOT Robert, though, he's an asshole. He'd get drunk and get into a fight and then get all maudlin.

Dead on. I wonder what would have happened had he married Lyanna. I would have to say that I would still be surprised if his character could have handled being responsible even in the face of Lyanna threatening to leave him.

LOL - That is usually my role!

THe cool Robert woul be the pre-Trident Battle Robert. But he would still probably get into fights and expect you to bail him out.

But you are probably right. The Robert from aGoT would be the one to come up to you with some drunk girl, snatch the car keys from your hands and leave you stranded until 4 in the morning at some bar in the middle of the city!!

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

I always felt that Robert was really tragic to. He was not made to be a king where he can readily get any pleasure he wants. I love when he says that he really lost on the Trident even though he killed Rhaegar. But I do think that being married to Cersei made him a bigger jerk than if he had married a woman who loved him. I believe in a postion with less power, better friends nearby, and a wife that didn't hate him he would have been drunk alot less and had fewer bastards.

Also, about Cersei and Jaime. They are not identical twins so I don't buy into they are apart of each other dealio. Thats just how Cersei justifies the incest. Their type of twins share no more genetic information than any brother and sister. So why doesn't she feel like she is "a part" of Tyrion. Because he is ugly and not her age?

I realize genetics would not be common knowledge in this world so don't point that out. I just mean any special twin connection Cersei feels is purely her imagination.

Ditto.

I like Lady Olenna. How far do her connections go? She killed Joffrey... where did she get the strangler? I sort of picture her as Glynnis Johns' character from The Ref.

Lyanna is an intriguing character to me. Was she really abducted by Rhaegar? Aerys murdered her father and brother... what would she have convinced Rhaegar to do if he'd won on the Trident? Would Rhaegar have deposed Aerys himself? Was Lyanna (assuming she ran off with Rhaegar) just going to be Rhaegar's mistress the rest of her life?

Osha also really catches my attention. She is intelligent, free spirited, and strong. Does she really intend to guard Rickon to pay her debt to Robb? Does she intend to murder Rickon to settle the score with the Starks?

My favorite lady?

Oh, probably Loras.

Chiswyck: "Ser is not saying a word, just brooding on the Knight o' Pansies and that bugger's trick he played."

Jaime: "Now sheathe your bloody sword, or I'll take it from you and shove it up some place even Renly never found."

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

JS, you did not think of it because you are more of a serious poster than me.

Yoss, good one.

Tyrion: You know what, lady? I'd like to tie you to the back of a ******* truck.
Olenna: You don't have the balls.
[Tyrion leaps up from his chair toward Olenna and is intercepted by Mace]
Mace: Don't do it; it's not worth it.
Tyrion: I ******* hate her, Mace!
Mace: I know, I know.
Tyrion: What is the matter with you? I thought Mothers were sweet and nice a-a-and patient. Your husband ain't dead, lady. He's hiding. I know loan sharks that are more forgiving than you.

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

I liked Ygritte, poor Jon, at least he didin't have to choose between her and the Nights Watch since the decision was decided for him after her death.

Female Characters I dislike: Cersei, Lysa, Queen of Thorns, Margeray and Asha.

Those I Like: Brienne for all she is female she is also the one true knight in the books so far, besides some of those who have already died.
Meera, frogs aren't all that bad, and if the Frey's dislike them so much the Crannogmen must be good.
Arianne, she was just following her heart, although I admit she is rather sneaky, if only her father had taught her how to trust by trusting her she wouldn't have turned out this way though.
Arya because she is queen of the world in my eyes, she goes where she wants and does what she wants.
Sansa, the poor girl has been through so much and brutallized by one she once admired, these experiences have made her retreat so far into herself is it any wonder she does what she's told? Her beauty making every man want to rape her hasn't helped much either. Once she breaks free of her shell though she will be one to reckon with, even in ASOS her potebtial is beginning to surface, soon she will surpass Littlefinger at manipulation of people and keeping secrets.
Dany because she is the mother of dragons, need I say more?
Lady Frey (Her first name alludes me at the moment), the one that is Jaime's aunt and wife to Emmon who Cersei granted Riverrun to, although a minor character I find her open bluntness rather refreshing. She is a hypocrite and doesn't care to show it, she knows what she wants and lets others know as well, atleast that was how she was around Jaime.

I know I am forgetting some but that's it for now.

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

My vote...
1)Sansa-because, just because
2)Daenerys-hello?"For I am but a young girl and know little of the ways of war." and the dragons
3)Arya-I love her spunk
4)ALL of the Sand Snakes

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

My picks are:

1. Brienne (I think she gets a bit of a bad rap)
2. Asha Greyjoy (any guy should have her on their list)
3. Meera (high hopes for her in the next book)
4. Arianne Martell (got lots of potential)
5. Deanerys (when she's kicking a**)

No, I don't think Loras would qualify because I'm not yet convinced he plays for the other team...

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

TK, GRRM admitted that Loras and Renly were lovers. But, that does not make him a lady. that is not a pc post, Boaz.
Asha "this is my suckling babe" Greyjoy,
Danaerys "The Unburnt" Targaeryn
Yggritte "You know nothing Jon Snow".
Not Loras.

Re: For the Ladies (Of ASoIaf, not this forum!)

Where did my post go?
Try again...
Asha "this is my suckling babe" Greyjoy
Dany "I am but a young girl and know nothing of war" Targ
Arya "Stick them with the pointy end" Stark and
Meera "I can't think of a quote" Reed.
Oh, there it is. sorry about that.
