Re: Shaman's Crossing

I got it for Christmas, and I liked it. Lord knows it was better than most of the crap that's showing up on the shelves these days. My main issue was that the main character didn't grow on me much. I liked him, but I didn't love him, as I did Fitz. I suppose he was a bit too stiff and somewhat close-minded, and I couldn't relate to him well. However, I think the next book(s) will show some major character development. I'll gladly read on.

I think that was done on purpose so that over time Nevare will grow into a character that the audience either loves or hates with a passion. In order to achieve this I think it has to happen very slowly, just my oppinion.

I agree completely. The character of Nevarre could easily go either way in the readers appreciation, and I think Hobb has done this on purpose. I think that Nevarre isn't all that sure if he likes himself either.

Re: Shaman's Crossing

You have to look at the society he was raised in. Everyone in it is stiff. That's my problem with the book. Didn't like the culture. I know it will get better, but in the meantime, the culture irritates me.

I had a problem with the culture in this first book too. I'll probably try and read the 2nd book, just to see if things change.

Re: Shaman's Crossing

did not get a FEEL for any of the characters

You either HATED or LOVED them intensely in all the prior series here it was well ..... after eating REALLY,REALLY GOOD HOMEMADE CURRY .... someone slipped in a pre-packed,do-it-by-the-numbers curry.

Bland & Tasteless & Predictable

Lightbulb Re: Shaman's Crossing

I enjoyed Shamans Crossing and am waiting for the next one to be released. Like eveyone else is saying it is setting the ground work for the next 2 books.

I liked the interplay between the two worlds. I loved the Soldiers sons 'crazy' cousin, she seemed the most normal up against the other characters. Many of the characters frustrated me but that just made it better in the end... I don't want to give away too much if you haven't read it.

Re: Shaman's Crossing

I'm not much of a Hobb fan really but Shaman's Crossing sounds like it migjht be OK. What's Hobb's best series to date (read Livership series and didn't like much)..?

Re: Shaman's Crossing

Liveship was my favourite.Shaman's Crossing I found entertaining, the lack of action didn't bother me in the slightest, she gave us a lot of insight into the culture Nevare was growning up in.

Re: Shaman's Crossing

Well I particulary like books that analyse culture rather than just use straight up action all the time, so perhaps I should give it a try Nixie?

Re: Shaman's Crossing

I enjoyed Shaman's Crossing and I would say that it is the setup book for what I think will be a good series.
