I thought suggestion would be better because it would fit with Josephine's life. She would I think be more fluid and subtle, whereas the boys would say it as is in as few words as possible. Also as you say, her knowledge of a better life, would make the situation 'feel' so much worse.

She 'knows' that life need not be like this and that is a terrible piece of knowledge to have. But now she also 'knows' that life can be like this and involve others just like her.

Rickhard being killed works ... would work very well.
