I'll second Urlik. For example. Vimes appears in several of the books that he isn't the main character in (The Truth, Monstrous Regiment) and while it isn't necessary to understand who he is from the other books, it adds a little something extra. Same for someone like Lu Tze. He shows up in minor parts in books such as Small Gods, then makes grander appearances later.
