I read a book years ago... but have forgotten the author and title.

Basic story was that one night, everyone on earth has the same dream, where an alien intelligence asks them if they are willing to join their cosmic collective. Downside is, they will leave their bodies. Upside, they will have full knowledge of the universe (as part of this collective), will never die, and will travel the universe. Most of the earth's population accepts this offer, but some people do not. Late in the story, there is quite a bit of conflict between those who have accepted the offer, and those who have not.

Reason I'm asking is that I'd like to read some of this author's other work.

But welcome, anyway, twhitelaw. Perhaps someone else will recognize the story you describe. I think you might be more successful finding answers to your question in the "Books" board. You might want to post it over there.

Amazon has a cool new feature, you can now search by text inside the books. So, go and put in a few key words (the more specific, the better as with one keyword you are likely to get thousands of results) and see what you get. I had a blast playing with it the other day.
