I've just recently started to read many different authors as well. A set in a very different style from Hobb that struck my attention is called Dragonlance. There are many authors that write about this "setting" but the first and best two work together, "Wies and Hickman". If you are interested they have about 15 books and the first one to read is called "dragons of autum twilight". It's an easy read and i hope someone takes it up. Another interesting autrhor is Jennifer Fallon. If you look up a book called "Medalon" then you would be at a good starting point to read her books.
