I would have picked west for Switzerland as well. It's dodgy to make up the borders, where does West Europe ends and Northern Europe starts?

For me Northern Europe is a synonym of Scandinavian Europe and so starts with Denmark. Eastern Europe is Slavic states of Europe except perhaps former Yougoslavian states which are Mediterranean countries. Southern Europe are Mediterranean Europe plus Portugal. And Western Europe is what remains. Therefore I think Austria and Netherland are in Western Europe.
