Sam is the real hero of LOTR. He represents the 'poor bloody infantry' - the ordinary footsoldier, miles from home, fighting and possibly dying for a cause he doesn't really understand but somehow staying cheerful and positive through it all. (Though at the same time enjoying a good moan about.... well, anything, really - and capable of ruthlessness if the need arises).
Tolkien met men like that in the First World war but they have been the backbone of armies since before Agincourt and they are still out there today.
