| Re: Crown of Stars Book #7 Book Cover Thanks, Kelpie. I had wondered if perhaps that was it - two publishers, plus each having to pay even if they used the same art. But then I thought that might be too simple and straightforward. Oh, and I like the American version of this book's cover better, but I prefer the color scheme of the British version. Go figure. ![]() |

I'm wondering if the artists are able to read the books before they draw them so they can get a better feel on what to draw. | |

| Re: Crown of Stars Book #7 Book Cover Sometimes they do, sometimes they either don't have the opportunity or don't care to use it. Also, sometimes they receive very specific instructions from the editor and the art director (the first of which has definitely read the book but may have other goals in mind than an accurate and representative scene from the book). I'm thinking that Jody Lee is one of those artists who does read the book, or if she's too busy to do that these days (she's very much in demand) I'm betting that in this case she is in direct communication with the author. They've known each other for a long time, since Jody Lee was an aspiring cover artist and Alis Rasmussen an aspiring writer, and I've been told that they used to fantasize about the day when they would both be established and Jody would do a cover for one of Alis's books. Many books and many covers and many publishers later (and one name change for Alis), it finally happened. I remember Alis showing me the cover art for King's Dragon many months before the book was released and she was very excited and happy about how it turned out. But since all our Brits and Aussies seem to like the UK covers better, it looks like the art department over there gauged the tastes of their perspective readers very well indeed. |

| Re: Crown of Stars Book #7 Book Cover Well... I remember reading an article about the artwork done on The Golden Key. The artist apparently submitted himself as the artist featured on the front cover. I had the impression that he read the book and did a wonderful job depicting what the book was about in the illustrations on the front and back of the book. Now the art work done on that book, in my opinion... excellent. I don't know why I don't care for the US covers as much. I know Kate has said several times on her forum that she loves them and I respect that. I have a set of both book covers though. Although, my UK collection is incomplete. Btw, I just ordered the 7th book from Barnes and Noble. Im so excited. ![]() |
