Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date Thanks for the comments, folks. I really want to like this series and in some ways I love it, but dammit, how many POVs does Erikson need to tell this story? Sheesh! All in all, I love the whole concept and I think if I step away from it for a while and read a few more books (like aarti put it! ) then I'll be better prepared mentally for Memories. -g-

| Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date I have read soooo many fantasy/sci fi peices from tigana to the darkest road (GG Kay) and patricia mckillips riddlemaster trilogy. All the above pack a pretty hard emotional punch. However, none have been as exciting, poetic and tear jerking as memories of ice. there are soooo many parts that got me weeping and i would go into great detail except for spoilers. My top tear jerker ever was..........if only she had loved me i could have shone soo bright! anyone know the character and book I'm talking about here? I went onto MT straight away and finished it in a week: The best Erikson book I've read so far. Tehol and Bugg had me in fits. | |

Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date I have to say the first Gardens of the Moon. Yes it lacks the polish of MOI but for unbridled fantasy and an explosive story, SE has really never beaten his first. From Rake to his battle with the demon lord to Kalam & Ben vs the TA assasins. Only in that book do you get the impression that the empire might not win. The others (those with the empire) there is always a sense that no matter what the empire will always prevail. ![]()

Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date I've struggled with every book so far! I must admit that Erikson is a brilliant writer but I feel his 'fantasy' is not for me. Some of the characters have been wonderful, really great senses of dry wit...Anomander, Caladan Brood, Tehol and Bug and of course the Bridgeburners but how many have 'ascended' ? Reaper's Gale still seems as if it is a stand alone but with a few of the older characters popping up from seemingly nowhere into this place called Bluerose. Not sure how many times I have gone back through the book to see where they have come from. Maybe my memory is not as good as it once was! I have never liked the Toblakai, to me they seem as if they belong in someone elses book. However, I shall continue to read the series and hopefully find that at last I can enjoy and understand Erikson's work like most of you already do.

Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date My favorite is Deadhouse Gate for the Chain of Dogs sequence. Although I like the Y'ghatan sequence in Bonehunters nearly as much. But then, I seem to like Bonehunters a whole lot more than most. My least favorite, by a long way, is Reaper's Gale. Based on it, I'm seriously worried if I will, yet again, part ways with a long fantasy series before it's finished ![]()

Re: Your favourite Malazan novel to date I hadn't read a book in this genre since Lord of the Rings in my high school days. Started reading the Martin's Song; but since he's taking forever I started on the Malazan story. Now I've read the Malazan books twice. My first comment is that I'm not sure whether the first or the second reading was more entertaining. The volume of characters and activity takes a while to get used to; but for the most part I found each book worth reading and re-reading. I did think that RG was a hurried piece of work, so I'm hoping that TtH will benefit from some thoughtful reflection before being penned. Otherwise, if I had to pick favourites, I my #1 is MoI and #2 is DG. Inspired writing. At least the books are coming out...so stop enough with the thoughtful reflection Mr. Martin and get to work. You too Mr. Erikson; your fans are waiting. BTW, while not an Erikson book, Night of Knives was also an excellent read and if you liked the seven Malazan novels, you'll probably like NoK.
