| Re: Best duel of the saga Adding another, that while I do not think is the best, i'd rate it in my top 3 was in the Clone Wars - Count Dooku vs the Nightsisters when Dooku was practically blind (visually). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6D6P12D_Lg (sorry I don't know how to embed here, or if we can) |

| Re: Best duel of the saga I've not seen any of the Clone Wars cartoons yet, but i do hear a lot of very positive things about them. I'm planning on getting them all and watching them back to back. |

| Re: Best duel of the saga It is pretty good (especially if you're not strict on the Star Wars cannon). Though the earlier part of season 3 was very slow, it has been awesome the past 6 weeks. |

| Re: Best duel of the saga Here you go, Cayal. To embed, is tricky. I had to quote someone's comments to see how it is done. But it is quite simple coding. put i6D6P12D_Lg which is the number/letter part at the end of the video's url, inside of [youtube] brackets. Close the brackets off at the end of course. |

| Keep Moving Forward! | Re: Best duel of the saga Are the Clone Wars cartoons better than the prequels? If I really didn't like the prequels, am I then not likely to like the Clone Wars cartoon, or are they an improvement? Best duel - can you really go past the frenetic pace, the daring acrobatics, the sheer gutwrenching tension of the Obi Wan/Darth Vader duel on te Death Star? I think not. |

| Re: Best duel of the saga Seasons one 1 and 2 were good. This cartoon is good when it focuses on the the actual war. The movies didn't do enough of that. Unfortunately the last few weeks have been more about mystical mumbo jumbo than about the war that is supposed to be tearing the galaxy apart. |

| Re: Best duel of the saga Darth Vader vs. Luke in Episodes V and VI are tied for me. They are not the best in terms of action and visual effect (several Prequel duels do better there) but they represent pivotal moments in the saga, with a lot more depth than others, and thus they make better scenes as a whole. |

The strengths of those duels, and the original trilogy as a whole, was that they weren't trying to live up to anything. They just were what they were. The prequels were trying to live up to an idea of what the Star Wars universe, and the jedi, should be like before the rise of the Empire. The jedi had to be super fast, agile, and almost comic book-ish in battle. Because of that, some of the drama that characterized the struggles between Vader and Luke was lost in the prequels. Luke, Vader, and even Obi Wan had a lot of dialogue that gave weight to not only the physical struggle, but the philosophical conflict of right and wrong. It added another dimension to their confrontations that was lacking in the prequels. Count Dooku was a bit chatty when fighting, but without the other man countering his arguments, his dialogue fell flat. They were generally too busy moving after one another to bother giving any heed to strategic stops in the action that might support the dramatic flow. There was no fear between jedi knight and sith lord. None of them ever showed a lack of confidence. When Luke fought Vader, you could see all those emotions on his face. The original trilogy showed better body language, and a better range of expression. Vader toyed with Luke in Empire, until Luke made him angry, then Vader turned things up a notch. That kind of thing generally didn't happen in the prequels. They generally started at full speed from start to finish. I always viewed that as a weak point in the prequels, although most true to life confrontations with lethal weaponry would probably have less chatter.

| Re: Best duel of the saga For me, Luke v Vader in Return of the Jedi. The scene itself is possibly my favourite in the whole series, and John Williams' music gives the duel the feel of a Ben-Hur-type biblical epic. I always crank up the sound at that point. |

And I agree with everything you say, of course. The Prequels are too effects-oriented, in general, and emotional connection goes out the window. Often, the actors duel in front of bluescreen and have no idea what is going on in front of the characters, and are not properly directed, it seems. Of course they can't act well under those circumstances. It is impossible.
