The actress playing Brienne would need to be tall (unless they can do that with special effects), but bulk and muscle can be added by training and costuming. I see Brienne as being very plain, with poor teeth and thin hair, but not monstrous - just average, like most of us. Yes, she is very large and muscular, but I think the reason so many people hurled the insult 'Ugly!" and "Freak!" at her because her behaviour was so odd to them - so they said what they considered to be the worst insult one could tell a woman, especially a high born woman - to try to force her into a role they could understand. So I'm not convinced she is as hideous as her detractors paint her - people like Lord Tarly aren't the most objective observers. |
My friends and I were talking about this last night and we came to the conclusion that Brienne will have to be played by
a man, baby! Shades of Shakespeare!

I think Jaime is the best judge of what she really looks like. Sure he's banging his sister, but I think if she had any beauty at all he'd point it out, which I think he does with her eyes.
Here's a pic of Kane for your consideration of "The Mountain That Rides a Very Unfortunate Horse."
