The Count in
The Count of Monte Cristo is so cool because his decade of undeserved misery and trial transforms him from an innocent, amicable captain into a scarred, cold, wrathful avenger - not evil, but at times dangerously close.
Snape probably does have his own agenda, but I think there are one or two points on which he is immovable.
