The hum you're hearing isn't actually the light itself, but the mechanism used to regulate the flow of current through the plasma inside the tube. God, I'm such a nerd.
Anyway, mostly true, but not completely. Shopping sucks, unless you have a day to kill, and just want to look at what's out there. Going somewhere because you have to get specific things (ie grocieries) is a drag though, yes.
I can't wait until the "holiday season" is over with.
