Greatest Guitarist

Who do you think is the greatest ever? There are a lot of good ones, jimmy hendrix, jimmy page, slash, tom morello, the list goes on, but who do you think outshines all of them?

for me it has to be Brian May although Hendrix and Slash were really good.
Brian Mays rendition of god save the queen is the only time I've liked hearing it

Re: Greatest Guitarist

I don't think i could pick just one, lol, that's why i was asking, i mean, i would definitely have hendrix, page, slash, and morello as my top guys, but i don't know who i'd pick as the single greatest.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

David Gilmour is up there for me.

On a personal level I suppose John Squire (Stone Roses) Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh) Adam Jones (Tool) J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) Rory Gallagher (Solo) Muddy Waters (Solo)

But Clapton is a great call too.

That's the one. Testament and Cancer too, I think. He certainly does get around...

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Didn't he have a brain tumour?

I've got the Cause of Death (Obituary) and the Spiritual Healing (Death) albums he played on. I've shamelessly done air guitar in my bedroom to 'Body Bags' before now too.

Never saw either band live.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Yea. Scarily both he and Chuck Billy, the Testament singer, developed cancer soon after Chuck Schuldiner died of it. Fortunately, they're both over the worst now.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Best ever guitarist? That is a difficult question, for sure. Brian May, Slash, Jimmy Page and Clapton are greats. Peter Green played with real emotion. David Gilmour’s soaring solos are always my favourite.
For sheer technique though, what about Bert Jansch?

But there is a guy at my work who is probably better than any of them. Self taught too.

Re: Greatest Guitarist

Zack Wylde? Yngwie Malmsteen? Steinar Gundersen? just throwing some names out i don't really believe any guitarist is the best but there are those who stand out that goes without saying.
