Re:Turkey entering the EU

Yes, but even successful defense can come at a dear cost. It is better to deter attack in the first place, and Saddam doesn't need to occupy Turkey or anything like that to accomplish his aims in a spoiling attack.

Re:Turkey entering the EU

Well, after all that drawn-out haggling Turkey lost out due to democratic processes. There's got to be something quite admirable there, especially as Tony Blair in Britain has decided for everyone that the UK will attack, regardless of what everyone else thinks. And, as usual, the Conservative Party voted against public opinion!

BBC article on the Turkey situation here.

Re:Turkey entering the EU

I guess the Turks are trying to persuade us to give more weapons to the Kurds.

Or they're so dumb they actually think they can annex a piece of Iraq as "part of the coalition" after refusing to grant cooperation before.

Well, it seems that the report has since been denied - click here for it.

And hopefully it would stay that way. Last thing we all need in the world right now is a loose cannon in an already tense situation.

Re:Turkey entering the EU

Ah, so that's why we've taken to calling Bush a "cowboy" rather than a 'loose cannon'.

Turkey still have itchy fingers about the Kurds issue:

Turkey moves to check Kurds.

Let's just hope it doesn't get ugly (or vice versa, depending upon your outlook )

Re:Turkey entering the EU

Time to revisit Turkey. That's certainly what the US thinks as well, as they look to patch up links damaged in the war against Iraq earlier this year - not least by the Turkish parliament's vote against allowing the USA to use troops to use the country to launch a northern invasion:

US and Turkey seek common ground
