I've only read his On Writing, but I was very pleased with it - far better than OSC's attempt (patronising, and arrogant).

The Queen of King

My favorite King novel is still Carrie. If only he had spent more of his writing career with a honest, active editor.....

I quite liked On Writing. Have you read Danse Macabre, King's earlier book that talks about horror and science fiction writing? It is very good, as well, though longer than On Writing.

Re: Stephen King

I'm a big King fan, and sorry to say, I really loved 'The Stand' - to me, the quintessential good vs. evil apocalyptic tale. Flagg (the dark man) appears in a few of his stories......in one, he is a wizard, another, he is just mentioned in passing. Only prob with 'The Stand' for me, was the hokey 'hand of God' ending, as I am something of an agnostic.

I just really like the way he develeops the characters, and he really does know how to freak people out.

My faves....

The Dark Tower series
The Stand
The Shining
The Talisman
Insomnia

Re: Stephen King

i liked kings bachman books rage and the longwalk in particular. got to say i remember liking the talisman alot but i read that nearly 12years ago i think. i am curently working on the dark tower series and like them very much but i havent finished because i cant get the last three yet.

however i know what you mean brian, I, i read that book where the four friends are camping and start farting out aliens .. the dreamcatcher... i just find king sometimes drawls way off on a tangent that he really doesnt need to... almost like he is filling pages and i feel the urge to jump over paragraphs. i do like his work but i do find that his offbeat tangents are annoying to me.

Re: Stephen King

I dearly loved the first books in the Dark Tower series (I-III) the fourth was disappointing and to tell you the truth the last three had me shaking my head at how he was able to mimick the writing style of so many other great writers but still end up with a complete rag that the used book stores only want to give a $2.00 store credit for (that's not sarcasm). Maybe its just that I outgrew his writing style, but I don't think so, I still love his novel The Talisman written with Peter Straub. I'm surprised JK Rowling didn't sue him for copyright infringement, but I guess she's not as much of a stickler as, say, George Lucas. For anyone who likes the first three books, I would reccomend stopping there and imagining how you would like it to end. Anything you come up with is bound to be better and it will save you much disappointment.

Re: Stephen King

Heh, never read any of King's books, but the theatrical versions of his writings have been pretty good.
Lived near him in Florida and seen him at the local Publix shopping once, but I didn't have the nerve to bother him and say hi. I know that fame would get under my skin if people were always saying hi and asking me questions about my stories, when all that I wanted was a loaf of bread.

Re: Stephen King

I've been a King fan since I read "Carrie" in the1970's. Granted some of his books are real dogs but in general I keep reading. I never got through "Dreamcatcher" because I just couldn't see the story getting good enough to overcome the anal arrival of the aliens. But I thoroughly enjoyed many of his books. I haven't made a concerted effort yet but I need to see if his accident did more to his writing than just delay it for a year or more.

It's sitting on my bookshelf and I think I did read it but at my age I'll probably have to look over some of it to remember. Seems like I read it a few years ago.
