Hearts In Atlantis

I read this recent novel by King a while back and was greatly impressed - one of the best things he's written in a while, I think. It's a series of inter-connected stories that revolve around the Vietnam war (although the war itself is depicted only in flashbacks). Mostly realistic, it has a few fantastic elements that also tie it in withthe Dark Tower series. Has anyone else read this? What did you think? How did the movie compare?

Haven't actually seen the movie, but i was highly impressed with the book.......not really his usual thing which made it all the better because it was unexpected.
If anyones seen the movie let me know what you thought, it may be worth a look.

Re: Hearts In Atlantis

The movie was pretty good, though as ever not a patch on the book. From memory I believe it centred only around the first part of the novel, and possibly some of the end. It was some time ago that I read the novel, too, so am a bit hazy. I remember I quite liked it, though. I think King is at his best when he is writing about childhood, whether realistically, as in The Body, or in horror, as in It.

Re: Hearts In Atlantis

I thought everything written in the book was very well written, and I would have to agree that he was in splendid literary form. My only complaint is that for something labeled as a "novel" the mini stories of the book felt disjointed.

Which is probably why the film adaption is more like a snapshot of the total context of the novel. When you think of it, the movie only adapted no more than a forth of the book. I don't necessarily regret that the adaption didn't cover all the stories in Hearts in Atlantis, but the college segment of book was my favorite part.

I read 'Hearts In Atlantis' a few years ago and it was brilliant, one of the best stories that Stephen King has written.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the book but was disappointed in the movie. There was so much more in the book that was either glossed over or ignored completely.

I didn't enjoy the movie either, it was a bit of a let down after reading it. I found a copy of 'From a Buick 8' the other day, I will need to read it.

Anyone else read it?
