Not strictly fantasy, but involving characters of legend and myth, so I reckon close enough - The Warlord Chronicles, by Bernard Cornwell.

I'll nominate the Banned and Banished series again (because it would be interesting to discuss this).

R Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing series - well worth discussing.

OK, I'll second Bakker's trilogy as well - should read it till November and nominate Cherryh's Morgaine series (4 books). OK, I am biased - she's my favourite author but these is one of her best series.

Do the series' have to be complete? Because I was under the impression that only the first book of Bakker's series was released - therefore would it not be better nominated for the individual book discussion as opposed to a series discussion?

Yes that is a good point you make there Culhwch. UK and US have the first 2 books out. In OZ as Orbit UK had signed up to publish these books, means the first book is out, the second due in TP Nov 2005 for our market and Book 3 won't be out until Jan 2006 and not in OZ until approx June 2006.

I have the first 2 books (long story....) but no-one will be able to comment largely on Book 3 yet.

Having said that, the Bakker books so far are filled with a lot of themes/ideas so I think there'll be plenty for people to talk about.

The Morgaine cycle... Gate of Ivrel, Well of Shiuan, Fires of Azeroth, Exile's Gate. 4 volumes, the first 3 of them recently came out in one book, The Morgaine Saga. The Gate of Ivrel was Cherryh's first novel, written back in 1976 if I'm correct. It's science fantasy, but really IMO fantasy, no tech elements or anything like that in there.
If you want more details, you can check out this thread about Cherryh .

I'm still of the opinion that the series' nominated should be complete. The idea is to discuss a series, not the first one or two books of a series, and thus surely one of the main points of discussion would be how the story develops and resolves over a number of volumes.

What does everyone else think?

I think if possible all the books for the series should be released. However, some of the longer running, incomplete series should also be considered So e.g. The Dresden Files has 6 books out now but isnt completed. That to me is enough books involve a good discussion
