| The Two Kenobis Actors Alec Guiness and Ewan McGregor both played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi quite well. However, there are certain differences in terms of the portrayal of the role that have created some inconsistencies. In The Empire Strikes Back, we learned that Obi-Wan was trained by Yoda, not Qui-Gon. Plus, he was just as reckless as Luke, and yet he wasn't anything of the kind. Afterall, I've always respected and admired the character, however, in Episode 3, my viewpoint of Obi-Wan was tarnished when he left Anakin to nearly burn to death on the lava planet Mustafar. He told him that he loved him like a brother and wished he could have helped him during the beginning of his training, and yet he had a chance to help him after their duel on Mustafar was over, but deliberately refused to help him. It really bothered me that he did that to Anakin. That particular scene showed that Obi-Wan was just as cold-hearted and unforgiving as a dark Jedi or Sith Lord. Oh, you can find excuses as to why he did what he did, like refusing to kill an unarmed man because it's not the Jedi way, but Obi-Wan should have at least tried to help him by levitating him or at least killing him as an act of mercy. It's no wonder Vader killed him in episode 4! Was Obi-Wan right in leaving Anakin to burn nearly to death, or should he have tried to save him? Whitestar |

He was fighting darth vader, and you have to remember it is the job of the Jedi to face the Sith. In the first ep, we do see some recklessness in Kenobi. Yoda does end up training Kenobi in the Jedi ways at the end of epIII. | |

| Re: The Two Kenobis You could also argue that Obi-Wan learned a lot from Yoda throughout his whole life as a Jedi - before and after Qui-Gon Jin. So when he told Luke that Yoda was the Jedi master who instructed him, he was telling the truth, really. Especially since Lucas hadn't invented Qui-Gon Jin yet. ![]() |

| Re: The Two Kenobis Slightly off topic but i recently saw Star Wars: A New Hope for the first time after watching the last prequel and putting aside what i thought of the three prequels as a whole, I have to say I thought Ewan Mcgregor did a fantastic job potraying Kenobi. Watching the original movie you notice just how much research Ewan must have done for the role, with gestures, speech etc. It was so easy to think of Alec Guiness as the same charcter played by Ewan McGregor. I thought that Kenobi was unable to kill Anakin as he trully believed that Anakin would be the one to one day 'balance the force' (may not be the right term, but you know what i mean, a prophised saviour) and even with all that has happened he still has hope deep down that this can happen. There was no point helping Anakin then, he's made his choice and is not yet ready to face it's consequences. It's an event that needed to happen in order for Anakin to fufill his role later, by his choice and actions destroying the emporer. just my 2 cents..... by the way I disagree that Anakin kills Kenobi in episode 4 ![]() |
