If you're talking about "Prisoners", they couldn't use the DHD because there wasn't one. I've never seen an episode where they couldn't dial Earth directly if they had wanted to (but...)

This is a different argument: they have to dial a second planet where they know they can find someone else from the SGC who has a GDO, not because the DHD can't dial Earth. If they can't find a GDO they're still stuck off-world...

Why should they? The first six chevrons would possibly be quite similar though. The point of origin, as defined, is a per Gate symbol: the two gates on Earth have different symbols. The symbols seem to imply a 3D position in space, so at least twice SG-1 have used a different gate in orbit round earth to dial, but using the normal Earth point of origin as the the seventh chevron.
