Not a clue. Rules for what? Oh, I recall an earlier post where you said you bought a board game of Thud autographed by Pratchett. Hmm. It could go either way. It could be something like Myst where the book is a novelized version of the game or the game could just be an offshoot of the book itself. This is one I haven't read so I couldn't say for sure. Have you checked the book description on some place like Amazon? I just looked it up and it seems to be a basic Discworld book but there is also a mention of a game...well, we'll see when it comes out I guess.

I'm pretty sure it's a full novel.
Seems to be another Night Watch one.

Yeah, it is.

I hope this one's good... the past couple were a bit of a let down for me. I think he's just throwing 'em out too quick (1 book for adults, 1 for kids, plus all the miscellaneous crap EVERY YEAR), and they're starting to feel like paint-by-numbers.

The Watch ones are always cool though

Re: is the book thud actually a story or just the rules?

It is going to be another Vimes novel (see blurb below). Can't wait myself, as Vimes is one of my favourite characters. Don't really agree that Pratchett is churning them out too quickly these days. The only time I ever got tired of his works was when I read too many in a row without a break for other writers.

Koom Valley? That was where the trolls ambushed the dwarves, or the dwarves ambushed the trolls. It was far away. It was a long time ago.
But if he doesn't solve the murder of just one dwarf, Commander Sam Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch is going to see the battle fought again, right outside his office.

With his beloved Watch crumbling around him and war-drums sounding, he must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin and brave any darkness to find the solution. And darkness is following him.

He has written more Watch novels in the last couple of years, however, hasn't he? I mean, Night Watch, Monstrous Regiment (squeezes in because it does have a couple of scenes with Vimes) and now Thud. I think maybe because we like Vimes?

Isn't the Rise of Vimes the struggle of Everyman? From drunken failure to Duke of Ankh is quite a social leg-up. No-one else that I can think of on the Discworld has had such a detailed development. He's putting in cameos in most of the Ankh-Morporkbooks now- as well as in Monstrous Regiment, he appears in The Truth and (I'm nearly sure), in Thief of Time. I also get the distinct impression that the "hero" of the Watch books was going to be Carrot, but for some reason TP switched half-way through the arc.

Story or rules? Whatever it is, 'Science of Discworld II: The Globe' appears to be selling well here. This week in 'Booktrack' it was at #10.

Just recently finished it.

Definately a novel and not a set of rules.

Good enough read, not his best work, but better than the worst.

Just recently finished it. I loved it as I am a big fan of Vimes and the Watch. This is a good read - some great new characters (Mr Shine, AE Pessimal, and the Gooseberry for instance), a good enough detective story, lots of laughs and lots of digs at human society along the way.

I've got the book and the boardgame. The boardgame is similar to chess and using dwarfs and trolls.
