Re: Live albums

It really depends on the band.
Some are great live & unplugged, some sound the same and some sound worse

My favourite is Queen: Live at Wembley 1985 but then I have no taste

Re: Live albums

A good live album beats a greatest-hits collection anyday because that onstage energy is something few bands cpature in the studio.

AC/DC never sounded better than when they're live, and the 2-Cd set, released sometime before Ballbreaker, simply entitled AC/DC: Live is one of the best live albums ever.

Other live favourites:

Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypies Live at the Fillmore
Iron Maiden: Live After Death
Deep Purple: Nobody's Favourite
Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains The Same
Alice in Chains: Unplugged
Pearl Jam: Live on 2 legs (The version of 'Off He goes' here is superior to the studio track, IMHO)
The Cure: Not sure what it's called, it has complete live performances of Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers on 2 DVDs

Re: Live albums

i dont really like live CD's because the songs dont sound the same as the pre-recorded ones, also the crowds cheering gets annoying. on the other hand, if they use a lot of synthesizers which meens you wont hear the crowd (e.g. tangerine dream) then you wont hear the crowd and it's great

Re: Live albums

I think there are a few live albums that I rate highly.

One is by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (the best Scottish band..ever)

Another is by a band called Kingfish. I had the privilage of seeing this fine blues combo in 1977 at the Glasgow Apollo.

Finally, for some damn fine guitar action - there are a couple of live recordings of the late, great Rory Gallagher - fantastic stuff!

Re: Live albums

It depends.

I really like U2's "Rattle and Hum", but it isn't a traditional live album. It includes both live tracks and some tracks recorded in the studio.

I don't like watching concerts on TV or video, particularly. Always makes me wish I had been there. Although there was recently a televised Eagles concert on here, and I was able to sit through it. On the other hand, I was waiting for them to play "Desperado", and they didn't until the last song. Hmphf. Again, the real exception here is the video version of "Rattle and Hum", because it isn't just the band on stage. Same with The Band's "The Last Waltz". That one's great.

Iron Maidens live get the crowd to sing hum along to one of there songs Fear of the Dark and it add a great atmosphere to the place and song

Re: Live albums

Haven't listened to many live albums but I liked Bryan Adams unpluggged! It was awesome! He's one of the coolest Canadians I know!

Re: Live albums

Definately a fan of live albums, personal favourite at the moment would be Powderfinger's These Days: Live in concert and Hunters and Collectors Under One Roof, which was recorded at one of their last gigs before breaking up.

Re: Live albums

A bit too quiet for my usual taste in music but I enjoy -

Elton John - Live In Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
He is certainly a brilliant performer on stage, in touch with his audience.

Missed that concert unfortunately but was able to attend the next one in Melbourne. Flew from Perth on Friday night, went to the concert Saturday night and flew back to Perth Sunday morning!! Worth every cent!!

My other favourite live album is AC/DC Live. Just fantastic!!
