Blast from the Past: Terrahawks

Terrahawks was created by Gerry Anderson and Christopher Burr as a new science-fiction puppet show for kids. Anderson, having created such hits as Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet Joe 90, and U.F.O, was confident that this show would prove a huge hit with the fan base he had established in the 60's, and 70's, with his afore-mentioned earlier shows.
He was right.

It is the earth year 2020. Android forces from the Planet Guk have taken over the red planet Mars, to use as a base from where to launch their planned invasion of earth. Under the command of the witch-like Zelda, the evil Machines plot nothing less than the extinction of the Human Race!

Earth's only line of defense is the Terrahawks, an elite defense force, created [and commanded by] a clone of the renowned scientist Dr. Tiger Ninestien, to counter the threat of Zelda's invasion fleet.

Making up the team are Dr. Mary Falconer, Captain Kate Kestrol, Lt. Hawkeye, Space Operative Lt. Hiro, and the Zeroids (Orb-Shaped drones with emotion-chips fused into their hardware, created to act as Field operatives, If they wish, they can join together and work as one to accomplish a certain task. They are commanded in the Field by the pompous, but strict, Sgt. Major Zero, a Zeroid with a literal chip on his shoulder, and a major pain in Ninestein's rear), Armed with some of the most sophisticated battle vehicles ever devised, the Terrahawks seek to drive back the forces of Zelda with fierce determination.

Will they succeed?

Who can say?

But be sure of one thing..

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!

Been humming the theme tune of this recently, for no fathomable reason.

These guys had bits of sponge for hair

I've always wondered how much of an influence this series had on those abominable Power Rangers.

Power Rangers

Before Power rangers was released I received a test pilot screener (I consulted for a company who worked with Saban Ent.) Me and a few friends screened it and could not believe how cheesy it looked. All the monster fighting scenes from Power Rangers were lifted from an old Japanese called series Super Sentai. They took the “monster fighting and effects" from the original series and intercut it with new sequences shot on video. I would have never believed it would go on to be as successful as it did.

Still don't.

Actually, I never ever watched this. Yet, I was nurtured on Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet Joe 90, and U.F.O, so I would be that fan base you speak of. I don't know why I never saw this, but if I recall it was on very early evening in the children's TV slot, and at a time before video recorders were prevalent.

Wow, I remember Terrahawks. I used to watch it on Saturday lunchtimes whilst I was eating. Along the same lines, does anyone remember Star Fleet?

Star Fleet was ace. Many years ago, it was on at Sunday lunch-time on Central Television, and I never missed an episode. It's a shame it's never been released on DVD. I'd certainly buy it.
