I'd be interested to know if you have any fave 2nd hand haunts. I only get down there occasssionally and I don't have much time away from the fam so I would like to target the best ones. Sybers I know, and the one run by Syber's husband in Elsternwick.

Cheers... GF...
The one I got a good haul from the other day is called The Merchant Of Fairness specialisng in second hand books. They're located in Balwyn, Melbourne. The website is The Merchant of Fairness Home Page and they have a very catchy tune.....

Another second hand bookshop which was excellent was McLeod's bookshop in Box Hill. Unfortunately they closed down very recently which is a real shame!!

Another smaller SFF shop in the city is called Of Science and Swords. They're in The Strand, 250 Elizabeth Street. They're only stocking new books but not bad.

There's also an antiquarian bookshop with some beautiful books at the top end of Elizabeth street. Pricey but a real joy just to go in and explore! The kind of place you could easily loose yourself for several hours.

Hope that helps.

Re: Book Hauls!

GOLLUM ... that's alright. The Cat's done packing. Just remember the cream

Have an illustrated Dracula but it's by Hilderbrandt and for some reason although the art is wonderful it feels 'wrong'. Am curious about what your book is like.

The Earthsea Quartet is definitely a must. It's got one of my all time favourite dragons ... Orm Embar. Now that's a name to stand at the door and yell in the middle of the night.

And you've got Sandman .... Enjoy.

Re: Book Hauls!

GOLLUM ... So much for a certain someone saying he'd done with book buying ....

You got Thomas the Rhymer. That's a lovely, lovely re-telling of an old story. One of my favourites of all the re-tellings in that series.

And more Lovecraft is always a good thing. Have not gotten around tp reading Baudolino of Grace Adieu yet.

Am reading nthologies and graphic novels due to the wonky working hours. Have fun with your haul GOLLUM.

I'll second the Cat on Thomas the Rhymer -- that is a lovely, lovely book. And I do like the idea with the Lovecraft collections that bring together the stories that are major contributions to a cycle -- even if it's impossible to get them all in, since so much of his work is interconnected in various ways. Still, it's a very nifty idea, and the cover art on those is quite striking, as well.

I'm also curious to hear what you have to say about the Balzac... would you mind PM'ing me a list of the contents?

Re: Book Hauls!

Mammoth haul yesterday from the second hand book stalls at our weekly flea market - someone must've been having a clear-out.

Lucius Shepard - Life During Wartime (SF Masterworks)
Roger Zelazny - Lord of Light (SF Masterworks)
Ken MacLeod - Cosmonaut Keep & Dark Light
Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon
Isaac Asimov - Nemesis
Gregory Benford - Eater
Gregory Benford & David Brin - The Heart of the Comet
Vonda McIntyre - Dreamsnake
John Courtenay-Grimwood - ReMix
Stephen Baxter - Titan
Kim Stanley Robinson - The Memory of Whiteness & The Years of Rice & Salt

I nearly put my back out carrying them home

Pretty decent rain today, though. Just what Victoria needs.

I'd be interested to know how you find Stand On Zanzibar. I've been meaning to buy that one for years, but for some reason have never got around to it. Looks like a dense read.

Re: Book Hauls!

My friend needed to buy some books today, so we went to My Favourite Book Shop once again. And, well, seeing as I was there as well, I had to buy some books. What? Don't look at me like that, I had to!

The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
Timequake - Kurt Vonnegut

Both excellent in different ways. My advice, Hoopy, don't read Wasp when you have PMS.

Re: Book Hauls!

I just bought Priestess of the White and Last of the Wilds by Trudi Canavan - I read her Black Magician Trilogy and loved it so I thought I may as well see if these books are as good

I was proud of myself coming out of a bookshop with only 2 books
