I absolutely second the recommendation of Danse Macabre. I found it to be wonderful.

Oh, I know. I loved the part where he said that if Harlan Ellison didn't exist, it would have been necessary to invent him. I don't think I've ever read anything with more truth in it than that.

And if there was ever a King book where it was evident that the guy was writing about something he actually knows and loves and not just for the advance, this is it.

I have a very worn copy of that...need to actually read it through.
It had King's Night Flyer as I recall, a story I somehow couldn't care much for although Ravi keeps telling me it's not as bad as I make it out to be. It also had some cannibal story (Having a Woman at Lunch)which was totally idiotic and made me want to slaughter the person who wrote it. I have yet to read the others, there's a Starub story in there and a Ligotti as well...lazy bastard me.

Actually, a lot of people dislike that King story. The book also includes a story by M John Harrison - which ought to be good.

Ho I dug out my copy and just finished reading the Harrison story (The Great God Pan, same name as the Machen classic)...quite brilliantly written, am sure you will enjoy it.
