Re: Book Hauls!

Got hold of Clive Barker's Books of Blood 1-3. There was a very positive review on goodreads.

Re: Book Hauls!

I am much more reserved about the Books of Blood, but I do think they have an important place in the history of the genre and, along with some frankly silly and slipshod things in there, there are some which are true gems as well. For me, at least, Barker is often at his best when he brings a note of pathos as well as horror or terror to his work; the stories seem to be more complex, the writing cleaner and tighter (overall), and they simply seem more effective on both levels....

I'd be interested in your take on this. I coincidentally just finished re-reading it. It could be called The Book of the Damned Weird. I was intending to re-read the second one and then finally read the 3rd and 4th but I just can't get into them now. Maybe later.

Yes, when I was a young and impressionable horror fan these were must read books for the not so faint of heart. A few of these stories were eventually made into fillms, including The Midnight Meat Train and Dread.

One of my favourite novels is Barker's Imagicka. At the time I read this, I thought it was just mind numbingly awesome, with a fantastical blend of horror, gore and fantasy. I did pick it up a few months back, but have put off re-reading it due to the sheer size.

On a book haul note. I bought Ex-Patriots by Peter Clines. For fun and frivolous zombie/superhero antics, you just can't go past this series.

Its one of the books i fantisize reading when i have more free time after the Uni fall term. I have only read S&S books by Tanith Lee and i want to badly read her more weirder works. Her books in Paradys series, other similar books sounds delicious to me

Tanith Lee is in my free time reading christmas list up with Hesse,Camus,Conan Doyle,Wells,PKD. Hehe fun group there

Thanks for those comments. I actually have never read any Barker. I was planning to start with "Cabal". I will prob read something as part of "Horror Month".

My view of Barker so far, ILW- Incredibly Long Winded. Still not managed to get half way thru one!

Cabal is great, but my favorite is Weaveworld, which is among the finest urban-fantasies I've read.

Re: Book Hauls!

If you've not yet read Barker, I would strongly suggest one of the early Books of Blood, as a collection of short stories would present more variety in shorter compass than do several of his novels, which can be rather lengthy (to put it mildly). Of his novels -- at least those I've read -- I think The Damnation Game should be considered high on the list....

And, thanks to Extollager, I just received The Year of the Warrior, by Lars Walker....

That's a good one, too. Very creative.
