Re: Book Hauls!

The only thing I've read of Priest's (because there's a lot I haven't read yet) that was overtly SF, aside from "Inverted World" was the short story collection "Real Time World". That was a very good collection.

I don't mean to put you off reading reading those other novels though, they are all excellent. I just didn't want you to go in expecting something which they're not.

I haven't started on the collection yet, but I have read some of his poetry in the collection Adrift on the Haunted Seas. Like his nautical fiction it evokes a very bleak vision shot through with awe at the vastness and strangeness of the world, and of the sea in particular, with a smattering of sentimentalism. On the technical aspects of his poetry I must confess myself ignorant.

Re: Book Hauls!

It's the vision and the emotional content I am mostly interested in. The technical aspects of the verse, while important to several types of poetry, are less what I am interested in here. I tend to agree with Lovecraft's assessment of what was genuinely important in poetry (and why he tended to view his as not "real poetry", as he was so wedded to older models). When responding to a request that he "get away from the heroic couplet", and in the midst of a defense of why this was the ideal form for him, personally, he had this to say:

Quote:
Now I am perfectly aware that this is no more than downright perverted taste. I know as well as any man that the beauties of poetry lie not in the tinsel of flowing metre, or the veneer of epigrammatical couplets; but in the real richness of images, delicacy of imagination, and keenness of perception, which are independent of outward form or superficial brilliancy[....]
-- letter to Maurice Winter Moe, 8 December 1914 (SLI.4)

I gather from your comments that these are all present. I will definitely have to look up a copy of this when I am able.... Thanks for your feedback; and anything further you think may be of interest, please let me know....

To echo F.E.'s comments, really anything by Priest is worth reading antiloquax and I would strongly urge you to do so...not just the earlier more SF oriented works......

Thumbs up Re: Book Hauls!

just ordered-
"Simulacron-3" by Daniel F. Galouye (1964)

always wanted to read this one-
(this is the book the movie "the Thirteenth Floor" (1999) as well as the
1973 German (made for TV) movie "World On A Wire" is based on)
but it's always been a hard one to find - & quite pricey if you did...

looks like Phoenix Pick, the publishing company that's been re-releasing
a slew of A.A. Attanasio books, just put it out in June & I'm very happy
about it~

@Radix
Never heard of "Simulacron-3". From what I have just read on Wikipedia, it sounds amazing - especially since it was written in 1964!

Pretty sweet haul.....

Can't comment on Daniel F. Galouye and not a big wrap for Lonesome Dove but the rest are all excellent to my way of thinking.

I'll be interested to see your thoughts on these ones.

Well, it shows I am taking notice!

I liked what @D_Davis said about Lonesome Dove, so thought I'd put it on there.
@Radix mentioned "Simulacron-3", don't have that on my magic discs, but on the strength of how good that sounds I put on the two titles I have available.

I read Lonesome Dove quite a while ago, so perhaps I need to revisit it myself as my recollection on specific details is a bit vague.

The premise of Simulacron-3 does sound interesting. Certainly not an author I'm familiar with....

In my humble opinion you've got a lot of quality reading ahead of you there.

Good luck.
