Not sure if you are aware or not but this is part of the Camulod Chronicles. Along with T. H White's classic Once and Future King, Mary Stewart's magnificent Merlin trilogy including The Crystal Cave and Marion Zimmer Bradley's wonderful Mists of Avalon these form for me at least the best of the Arthurian fiction I've come across. The entire 6 plus stand-alone novel in the Whyte series come recommended.

Re: Book Hauls!

Picked up Replay, by Ken Grimwood, Redshift (sci-fi compilation), and War of the Worlds at my local thrift store for about five bucks. I was surprised to find Replay there. I'd heard good things about it, and considered buying it from Amazon at one time. About three chapters in -- pretty decent so far.

These look in really good condition. Good haul. My copies of the two Othernesses were purchased second hand and they look it. Of course I didn't pay more than fifty cents apiece. Never seen that particular Blatty cover before. First edition?

Yeah - the Blatty is a first edition. And I've never seen it before either. As a matter of fact, I can't even find a picture of it online. I'm trying to collect every cover of the book (and The Ninth Configuration). Blatty's a favorite of mine, and this is my favorite of his books.

I got these for $3.99 each - there's a cool little book store down the street from my apt. and they have a pretty good selection of vintage SFF.

I've been trying to resist buying any more books fo a while (as I have so many lined up to read) but I ended up buying:

"The Unsettled Dust" by Robert Aickman
"The White People and Other Stories" by Arthur Machen

Re: Book Hauls!

Here are mine. You probably already have these:

I got these used by the way. If my new books looked like this after I read them I'd have my hands cut off.
Back cover's a little better:

...but not much. Nice bookstore. Does it sell coffee too?

Nice.

Isn't it incredible how hard the publishers of this tried to make it look like a horror novel? It's pretty insane. I bet people people were utterly shocked to find, once read, that it was actually a theological-thriller/comedy. I don't think there's been an edition yet with a cover that really captures the essence of the novel.

I also have these:

Re: Book Hauls!

Well, I really liked THE EXORCIST but haven't read the others yet. Killer Kane sounds good, think that'll be my next WPB after I wrap a few things up. If it was truly horror I might save it for Halloween. Is it scary? Maybe I will. Never too early to start planning.

I like The Exorcist, too. Although I think Legion is better.

I actually like the re-worked Ninth Configuration version better than Killer Kane. It's not scary at all. Not one bit. It's not supposed to be. It's actually more in line with Blatty's earlier comedies, although it still has the deep religious angle of his post-Exorcist stuff.

The Ninth Configuration is in my top 10 novels of all time, and the film is in my top 100. It's really something special.

You know, there's this little coffee shop in town that has several monitors placed around the room and continuously plays old sf movies. Today they were showing an old Buster Crabbe Buck Rogers serial and at the beginning of chapter nine the synopsis mentioned a character named "Killer" Kane, quote marks included. I wonder if this could be Blatty's muse for his book?

Wow - that sounds like a cool place! And I wonder if that was Blatty's inspiration? Don't know.
